John 4:11 records the Samaritan woman’s first reply to Jesus at Jacob’s well. Her words show she has taken his offer of “living water” literally, and she points out that he has no bucket and the well is deep. She is speaking to Jesus, a Jewish man she has just met, at the well outside the town of Sychar in Samaria.

The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. So where do you get that living water?

What John 4:11 Means

The woman begins by naming a practical problem. “Sir” is a polite way of addressing a stranger, and it shows she has not yet recognized who Jesus is. She observes that he has nothing to draw water with, which is a fair point: the well was dug deep, and a person would need a rope and vessel to reach the water at the bottom. Her question, “where do you get that living water?”, assumes that the water he mentions must come from some source he has access to, and she cannot see how he could provide it.

The verse does not promise anything. It is a question asked by someone who is confused. What it reveals is how far the woman’s thinking has to travel before she can grasp what Jesus is offering. She is reasoning from the well in front of her, and Jesus is pointing to something the well can only represent.

The Context of John 4:11

The Gospel of John was written, according to tradition, by the apostle John, and it was composed to show that Jesus is the Son of God and that believing in him brings life (John 20:31). The Samaritans were a people who had their own version of the Law and their own place of worship on Mount Gerizim, and relations between Jews and Samaritans were strained. Jesus’ request for water, and his willingness to speak with her at all, would have surprised the woman, as her own question in verse 9 makes clear.

The verses just before show Jesus speaking of “the gift of God” (verse 10), and the verses after show him explaining that the water he gives becomes a spring within the person who drinks it (verses 13-14). Read in this setting, verse 11 is the hinge of the conversation. The woman is trying to make sense of a spiritual offer using only physical terms, and her confusion sets up the deeper teaching that follows.

Key Phrases in John 4:11

John 4:14

But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

Jesus’ reply in verse 14 completes the thought the woman begins in verse 11. Where she asks where the water comes from, he explains that the water he gives becomes a spring within the believer, flowing up to eternal life.

Exodus 17:6

Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb. You shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

This verse describes God providing water from a rock for the Israelites in the wilderness. It shows the same pattern of God supplying water where no natural source seems available, which helps readers see the Samaritan woman’s question against the backdrop of Israel’s own history.

A Short Prayer From John 4:11

Lord, I bring you the questions I have about what you can really do in my life. Some of them sound like the woman at the well, honest and practical, and I do not want to hide them from you. Help me to trust that you are not limited by the tools I can see. Open my eyes to the water you are offering, and let it become a spring in me that keeps flowing when my own resources run dry. Amen.
