BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

John 4:17 records the Samaritan woman’s short reply to Jesus, “I have no husband,” and his response that she had spoken truly. The point is that Jesus welcomed an honest, if partial, answer and used it as the way into a deeper conversation about who he is and what he offers. The verse is spoken by the woman at a well outside Sychar in Samaria, in the middle of a conversation with Jesus, a Jewish teacher who had asked her for a drink.

The woman answered, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You said well, ‘I have no husband,’

What John 4:17 Means

The woman’s answer is brief and guarded. She is responding to Jesus’ instruction to call her husband, and she gives a statement that is literally true in that moment: she has no husband living with her. Jesus does not dispute the words. Instead he says she “said well,” which means she spoke accurately about her situation, even though she left much unsaid.

The verse does not explain her history or pass judgment on it. It shows Jesus taking a short, careful reply seriously and treating it as a starting point. Readers should not read into it a full account of her life or a rule about marriage. What the verse does promise, in the surrounding story, is that Jesus knows the truth of a person’s life and still speaks to them with patience and respect.

The Context of John 4:17

John’s Gospel was written to show that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that those who believe in him receive life (John 20:31). The author is traditionally identified as the apostle John, though scholars debate this. The audience appears to be Christians and others being invited to faith, many of them likely outside the original Jewish setting of Jesus’ ministry.

Just before this verse, Jesus offers the woman living water that becomes “a well of water springing up to eternal life” (John 4:14), and she asks him for it. He then tells her to call her husband (John 4:16). Her reply in our verse is therefore not a random confession. It comes as she is being drawn toward the gift Jesus describes, and the exchange that follows in verses 18 through 20 turns the conversation toward worship and the truth about God.

Key Phrases in John 4:17

John 4:18

For you have had five husbands; and he whom you now have is not your husband. This you have said truly.”

Verse 18 finishes Jesus’ reply and shows how fully he knows the woman’s history. Reading it alongside verse 17 helps you see that Jesus affirms her honest words while also speaking the deeper truth she has not yet put into words herself.

John 4:14

But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

This verse contains the living water offer that comes just before our verse. It explains why the conversation has moved toward her personal life, since Jesus is inviting her into something far larger than a simple request for water.

A Short Prayer From John 4:17

Lord, you know the parts of my life I find hard to say out loud, and you know the words I am still learning to speak. Help me to answer honestly when you ask me questions, even when my answer is short and incomplete. Thank you that you do not turn away from the truth I bring you but meet me there with patience and kindness. Teach me to trust your living water more than my own fear of being fully known. Amen.
