John 4:39 means that many Samaritans from one town came to believe in Jesus because a woman they knew told them what he had said to her, and her simple account of meeting him was enough to bring them to him. The verse is a narrator’s note in John’s Gospel, describing the first wave of faith that spread through a Samaritan village after a conversation at a well. The woman is the one who speaks, and the people who believe are her neighbors.

From that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman, who testified, “He told me everything that I did.”

What John 4:39 Means

The phrase “From that city” tells you the setting. John has just described Jesus meeting a woman at Jacob’s well in Sychar, a Samaritan town, and this verse shows the news moving through the town. The word “many” signals that this was not a single convert but a growing group, and “believed in him” points to real trust in Jesus himself, not only admiration for a teacher who had spoken to a stranger.

The key detail is “because of the word of the woman.” Her testimony was the means God used to open their hearts. She did not offer a theological lecture. She said, in effect, “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did.” Her words were personal and direct, and they were honest about what she had experienced. The verse is about how belief often begins with someone telling what they have actually seen and heard.

The verse does not promise that every testimony will lead to belief, nor does it say the woman understood everything about Jesus at that point. It describes what happened in one town at one moment. It shows that God can use an ordinary witness, even one whose social standing was low, to bring others to Christ.

The Context of John 4:39

John’s Gospel was written to show that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing in him brings life. The author is traditionally identified as the apostle John, and the original readers were early Christian communities who needed encouragement and clarity about who Jesus was. Chapter 4 belongs to a section where Jesus crosses boundaries of race, gender and religion to reveal himself to people the world overlooked.

The verses just before and after set the scene. In verses 36 to 38, Jesus speaks of sowing and reaping, saying that some labor while others gather the harvest. Verse 39 begins the harvest he described, and verse 40 says the Samaritans begged him to stay two days. Verses 41 and 42 then show that many more believed, not because of the woman’s words alone, but because they had heard Jesus for themselves. Read this way, verse 39 is the first fruit of a harvest that continues into the verses that follow.

Key Phrases in John 4:39

John 4:42

They said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of your speaking; for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”

This verse completes the story begun in verse 39. The Samaritans move from believing because of the woman’s word to believing because they have heard Jesus for themselves. Reading the two together shows that testimony opens the door, and personal encounter with Christ brings faith to maturity.

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.”

(WEB)

Jesus promised his disciples that they would be his witnesses, beginning in Jerusalem and reaching the ends of the earth. John 4:39 shows an early example of that witness at work in a small Samaritan town. The woman’s testimony is one of the first signs of the mission Jesus gave to his followers.

A Short Prayer From John 4:39

Lord Jesus, thank you that you meet people in ordinary places and speak to them in ways they can understand. Thank you for the woman at the well, who was willing to tell her neighbors what had happened to her. Give me that same openness. Help me to share honestly what you have done in my life, without fear of getting every word right. Let my simple witness point others to you, so that they may come to know you for themselves. Amen.
