John 4:40 describes Jesus accepting an invitation to stay in a Samaritan town for two days after the people there asked him to remain. The verse is short, but it shows Jesus welcoming outsiders and receiving a warm hearing from people many Jews of his day avoided. The narrator, John, is the one reporting what happened after the Samaritans came out to meet Jesus.

So when the Samaritans came to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed there two days.

What John 4:40 Means

The verse begins with “So when the Samaritans came to him,” which links it to what has just happened. A woman from the town had spoken with Jesus at a well, and her testimony prompted her neighbors to go and see for themselves. Their coming out to him is the result of that conversation, not a random visit.

“They begged him to stay with them” shows real urgency. The word implies they pressed him, not merely that they were polite. They wanted more of his company and teaching, and they made that clear. Jesus does not have to be persuaded at length; he simply agrees to stay.

“He stayed there two days” is a plain statement of what he did. It does not promise that every visit ends in belief, nor does it tell us what Jesus taught during those days. The verse describes an openness that the surrounding passage then develops, but it does not claim more than it says.

The Context of John 4:40

The Gospel of John was written by a close follower of Jesus, traditionally identified as the disciple John, and it was likely composed for a community of believers in the late first century. John arranges his material around signs and conversations that reveal who Jesus is. The Samaritan episode in chapter 4 sits in the middle of this pattern, showing that Jesus’s identity as the Christ is recognized even by people outside Judea.

The verses just before and after fill in the picture. In verses 37 and 38, Jesus speaks of sowing and reaping and tells his disciples that others have already done the labor, so they are now gathering the harvest. In verses 41 to 43, many more Samaritans come to believe, and they tell the woman that they now trust Jesus because they have heard him themselves. Read this way, verse 40 is the hinge where a town moves from hearing a report to hearing Jesus directly.

Key Phrases in John 4:40

John 4:41

Many more believed because of his word.

(WEB)

This verse continues directly from John 4:40 and describes the result of the two days: many more Samaritans believed because of Jesus’s own word. Reading it alongside verse 40 shows how the invitation to stay leads to a personal faith that no longer depends on someone else’s report.

Luke 19:5

When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”

(WEB)

In this account, Jesus tells Zacchaeus he must stay at his house, and he goes to the home of a man others looked down on. The same willingness to stay with someone outside the expected circle appears in both passages, highlighting a consistent feature of Jesus’s ministry.

A Short Prayer From John 4:40

Lord Jesus, you did not hurry past people who wanted more of you. Help me to notice when others open a door to me and to receive that welcome with patience. Give me the willingness to stay long enough for trust to grow, both in my relationships and in my time with you. Teach me to value unhurried moments where understanding can deepen, and let my life reflect the openness you showed in that Samaritan town. Amen.
