John 5:23 teaches that God means for everyone to honor Jesus the same way they honor the Father, and that refusing to honor the Son is the same as refusing to honor God who sent him. Jesus says this during a dispute with Jewish leaders in Jerusalem after he healed a man at the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath. The statement is his own, spoken directly to those who were angry that he claimed a unique relationship with God.

That all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who doesn’t honor the Son doesn’t honor the Father who sent him.

What John 5:23 Means

The phrase “that all may honor the Son” describes the purpose behind Jesus’ authority. Honor here means more than polite respect. It is the kind of recognition and worship a person gives to someone whose worth and authority are beyond question. Jesus is saying that the Father has placed judgment in his hands so that everyone will give him that same honor.

The second half of the verse makes the connection sharp. Honoring the Father and honoring the Son cannot be pulled apart. If someone claims to honor God while dismissing Jesus, the verse says that claim does not hold. The verse does not promise that every person who admires Jesus as a teacher is saved, nor does it spell out every detail of how honor is expressed. It lays down the principle that the Son and the Father are one in authority and that the Son is rightly given the same reverence.

The Context of John 5:23

The Gospel of John was written in the late first century, traditionally attributed to the apostle John, and it was written so that readers would believe Jesus is the Son of God and have life in his name (John 20:31). Its audience includes both Jewish and Gentile believers, and this chapter is set in a conflict with religious authorities who felt Jesus was breaking the law and claiming equality with God.

Just before verse 23, Jesus explains that the Father shows the Son all he does and gives the Son the power to raise the dead and give life. Verse 22 then says the Father has given all judgment to the Son. Read in that setting, verse 23 is the reason behind those claims. The Son acts with the Father’s authority, so honoring him is not a matter of personal preference but of recognizing who God has sent.

Key Phrases in John 5:23

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

Jesus says he is the way, the truth and the life, and that no one comes to the Father except through him. This shows why honoring the Father cannot be separated from honoring the Son who makes that access possible.

Philippians 2:9-11

9 Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name; 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Paul describes God exalting Jesus to the highest place and calling every knee to bow to him. This passage expresses the same truth as John 5:23, that the Son is due reverence that reflects the glory of God the Father.

A Short Prayer From John 5:23

Lord Jesus, you are the one the Father has sent and entrusted with life and judgment. Forgive me for the times I have treated you as one voice among many, or as a helper I call on only when I need one. Help me to honor you in the way I speak, the way I give my time, and the way I make choices when no one is watching. Let my respect for you rest on who you truly are, and let it lead me to love the Father who sent you more deeply each day. Amen.
