BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

John 5:25 means that Jesus is speaking of a spiritual awakening, not only a future resurrection: people who are spiritually dead hear his voice and receive new life. Jesus says this hour has already begun, so the promise is meant for the present as well as the last day. He spoke these words in Jerusalem to Jewish religious leaders who were angry that he had healed a man on the Sabbath and called God his Father.

Most certainly, I tell you, the hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God’s voice; and those who hear will live.

What John 5:25 Means

The phrase “the hour comes, and now is” tells you that Jesus is pointing to a moment already underway. He does not say the hour will come someday only. He says it comes and it is now. The word “hour” in John often refers to the time appointed by God for a decisive event, and here it marks the period when Jesus’ own ministry brings life to people.

“The dead” in this verse does not mean people in graves. Jesus is describing those who are cut off from God, unable to respond to him on their own. The image of hearing a voice is important. Lazarus, for example, heard Jesus call his name and came out of the tomb. Spiritual life begins when a person hears the voice of the Son and responds in trust.

The verse also says “those who hear will live.” This is a real promise, but it is conditional on hearing and believing. It does not promise that everyone will automatically be made alive, and it does not remove the need for personal response. It does affirm that the life Jesus gives is certain for those who receive it.

The Context of John 5:25

John’s Gospel was written to show that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing in him brings life (John 20:31). The author is traditionally identified as the apostle John, and the original readers were probably Christians from the late first century who needed to understand who Jesus is. The Gospel repeatedly contrasts light and darkness, life and death, and truth and unbelief.

The verses just before and after show the setting. In verse 24, Jesus states that whoever hears his word and believes the Father who sent him has eternal life and has passed from death into life. Verse 25 expands on this, and verses 26 to 28 explain that the Father has given the Son authority to give life and to judge. Reading the verse in this flow shows that it is about the Son’s authority to bring spiritual life now, with a fuller public fulfillment still to come.

Key Phrases in John 5:25

Ephesians 2:4-5

4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)…

(WEB)

Paul describes believers as once dead in their sins and then made alive together with Christ by God’s mercy. It is a close parallel to John’s teaching that the dead hear the Son’s voice and live.

John 11:25-26

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. 26 Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

(WEB)

Jesus declares himself the resurrection and the life before raising Lazarus. These words show the same connection between his personal authority and the gift of life to those who believe in him.

A Short Prayer From John 5:25

Lord Jesus, you are the Son of God, and your voice has the power to bring the dead to life. I confess that there are places in my heart that feel quiet and unresponsive to you. I ask you to speak again, so that I may hear your word and receive the life you give. Open my ears to listen and my heart to respond in trust. Where others around me are still far from you, I ask you to call them by name and bring them into your light. Thank you for the life you offer now and for the hope of what is still to come. Amen.
