John 5:29 says that everyone who has died will rise, and that the outcome depends on how they have lived: those who did good rise to life, and those who did evil rise to judgment. Jesus spoke these words in Jerusalem to religious leaders who were questioning his authority to heal and to teach, so the verse is his own claim about who he is and what he will do at the end of history.

And will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.

What John 5:29 Means

The phrase “will come out” refers to the dead leaving their tombs when Jesus calls them, a picture that matches the expectation of a general resurrection at the last day. The verse describes two destinations and says nothing about any middle place. Jesus is not describing a moment of death where people are sorted, but a later event in which the whole human race stands before God.

The words “those who have done good” and “those who have done evil” describe the direction of a life, not a single act. Elsewhere in John, doing good is tied to coming to the light and believing in Jesus, so the verse points to a settled orientation of heart. The verse does not promise that anyone can earn life by effort, and it does not tell you how many fall into either group.

The Context of John 5:29

John’s Gospel was written late in the first century, traditionally attributed to the apostle John, and it was addressed to a community of believers who were being pressed by Jewish authorities over their confession that Jesus is the Son of God. In chapter 5, Jesus has just healed a man at the Pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath, and the leaders are attacking him for it. Verses 26 and 27 explain that the Father has given the Son life and the authority to judge.

Verse 28 introduces the resurrection with the words “Don’t marvel at this,” so John 5:29 is the explanation of why this authority matters. Read in that setting, the verse is less a warning about the future than a statement that the same voice which gave a sick man his strength will one day call every grave open. Verses 30 to 32 then return to Jesus’s dependence on the Father, which is why his judgment can be trusted.

Key Phrases in John 5:29

John 3:36

One who believes in the Son has eternal life, but one who disobeys the Son won’t see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

(WEB)

This verse sets belief in the Son against refusal to obey him and links eternal life to the way a person responds to Jesus. It helps explain what “doing good” means in John 5:29, namely a life that trusts the Son.

Daniel 12:2

Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

(WEB)

Daniel describes a resurrection of many who sleep in the dust, some to everlasting life and some to shame and contempt. Jesus’s words in John echo this older hope and show how it reaches its fulfillment in him.

A Short Prayer From John 5:29

Lord Jesus, you hold the authority to give life and to judge, and nothing in heaven or earth lies outside your sight. Thank you that you call the dead out of their graves and that you have already called me out of my own darkness. Teach me to live in the light, to choose what is good, and to trust you with the outcome of my life. When I fail, remind me that you are the one who raises, forgives, and makes new. Amen.
