BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

John 5:42 is Jesus telling a group of religious leaders that, although they study Scripture closely, they do not have God’s love living inside them. He is speaking to Jewish leaders in Jerusalem who were checking his words against the Law of Moses, and he is describing what he sees in their hearts rather than what they see in their books.

But I know you, that you don’t have God’s love in yourselves.

What John 5:42 Means

The verse begins with “But I know you,” which signals that Jesus is responding to something just said. He is not guessing about his audience. He claims an insight into their inner condition that goes deeper than their outward devotion. The word “know” here implies more than recognition; it carries the sense of seeing clearly what is really going on.

The phrase “God’s love in yourselves” is the center of the verse. Jesus is not saying these men lack an intellectual grasp of God or fail to keep religious customs. He is saying that the love God intends for his people, the warm, obedient, trusting love that should characterize a relationship with him, is absent from their hearts. Knowledge of the Scriptures had not produced that love.

What the verse does not promise is a verdict on every person who studies the Bible. It names a specific failure in a specific group at a specific moment. It also does not tell us how to measure the love in someone’s heart. It simply shows that outward religious activity and inner devotion to God can come apart.

The Context of John 5:42

The Gospel of John was written to show that Jesus is the Son of God and that believing in him brings life (John 20:31). The author presents Jesus in a series of confrontations with Jewish authorities, and chapter 5 is one of the sharpest. Just before verse 42, Jesus says the Scriptures testify about him and that his critics refuse to come to him for life (verses 39 to 40). Verse 42 explains why: they do not have God’s love in themselves.

Just after verse 42, Jesus says he has come in his Father’s name and they do not receive him, while they would welcome someone coming in his own name (verse 43). He then asks how they can believe while seeking glory from one another rather than from God (verse 44). Read in this sequence, the verse is the diagnosis that explains the rejection. The problem is not a lack of evidence but a heart that is not oriented toward God’s love.

Key Phrases in John 5:42

1 John 4:8

He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love.

(WEB)

This verse states plainly that God is love and that whoever does not love does not know God. It reinforces the link John 5:42 makes between knowing God and having his love at work within a person.

Matthew 23:27

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

(WEB)

Jesus rebukes religious leaders for looking clean on the outside while being full of hypocrisy inside. It shows the same concern for inner reality that marks John 5:42.

A Short Prayer From John 5:42

Lord, you see my heart more clearly than I see it myself. Thank you for not being fooled by religious habits alone. Search me and show me where your love has not taken root. Where I have been content with knowing about you, draw me into knowing you and loving others as you love. Pour your love into my heart by your Spirit, so that my words and actions flow from it. Amen.
