BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

John 5:42 says that Jesus knows the hearts of the people he is speaking to, and that they do not have God’s love living inside them. The verse is a diagnosis, not a curse: it names the gap between knowing about God and actually loving him. Jesus speaks these words to a group of religious leaders in Jerusalem who study the Scriptures closely but refuse to recognize him as the one those Scriptures describe.

But I know you, that you don’t have God’s love in yourselves.

What John 5:42 Means

The phrase “But I know you” carries weight. Jesus is not guessing at their motives; he sees through their daily routines of Bible study and temple worship to what is really happening inside them. The word “know” here means something closer to seeing clearly, the way a close friend can read your face and tell you what is wrong before you say a word.

“That you don’t have God’s love in yourselves” is the center of the verse. Jesus is saying the love that belongs to God, the warm, loyal, self-giving kind of love that flows from God’s own character, has not taken root in them. They have plenty of knowledge and religious activity, but the love itself is missing. The verse does not say they can never change. It describes the present condition of their hearts and sets up the invitation that follows in verses 43 to 47.

What the verse does not promise is that knowing the Bible automatically produces love. Jesus says his critics study the Scriptures diligently (verse 39), yet they still miss the point. Learning about God and loving God are related but not identical, and John 5:42 is a reminder that the second can lag behind the first.

The Context of John 5:42

The Gospel of John was written, according to long-standing church tradition, by the apostle John, who had been one of Jesus’s closest followers. He wrote for a mixed audience, both Jewish and Gentile readers, and he arranged his account around seven signs and a series of conversations and speeches that reveal who Jesus is. Chapter 5 takes place during a Jewish festival in Jerusalem and follows the healing of a man who had been ill for thirty-eight years at the pool of Bethesda.

The verse sits inside a longer argument. Just before it, Jesus says the Scriptures testify about him (verse 39), and in verse 40 he laments that they refuse to come to him for life. Verse 41 clarifies that he is not seeking human applause. Just after it, in verses 43 and 44, Jesus contrasts their desire for glory from one another with their neglect of the glory that comes from God alone. Read this way, verse 42 is the hinge of the passage: the diagnosis that explains the refusal described on either side of it.

Key Phrases in John 5:42

Romans 5:5

And hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Paul explains that God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. This shows that the love Jesus says is missing in his critics is something God gives, not something people produce on their own.

1 John 4:7-8

7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God, and knows God. 8 He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love.

(WEB)

John later writes that love comes from God and that whoever loves is born of God. These verses expand on the same theme, linking genuine knowledge of God with a love that shows itself in action.

A Short Prayer From John 5:42

Lord, you see me more clearly than I see myself. You know where my faith has become a set of habits and ideas, and you know the places in my heart where your love has not yet taken root. I do not want to settle for knowing about you while my heart stays cold. Pour your love into me by your Spirit, and let it flow out into the way I speak, serve, and forgive the people around me. Show me the spots where I am holding back, and gently make them yours. Thank you that you are patient with me and that your love is not something I have to earn. Amen.
