John 5:46 means that the people who trusted Moses should have recognized Jesus, because Moses wrote about him. Jesus is saying that belief in Moses and belief in him are not two separate things, since the Law pointed forward to the Messiah. Jesus speaks these words in Jerusalem to Jewish leaders who were rejecting him, after a healing at the pool of Bethesda and a long exchange about his authority from the Father.
For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me.

What John 5:46 Means
The phrase “if you believed Moses” describes a claim these leaders already made. They prided themselves on following Moses and the Law, so Jesus takes their own loyalty as the starting point. He does not argue that Moses is unimportant. He argues that a sincere reading of Moses would lead them to him.
The second half, “for he wrote about me,” is the reason. Jesus is saying that the books of Moses contain promises, types and foreshadowings that find their fulfillment in him. The verse does not promise that every reader will automatically believe. It states that the testimony is there and that rejecting Jesus means rejecting the very witness they claim to honor.
The Context of John 5:46
John’s Gospel was written to show that Jesus is the Son of God and that believing in him brings life. The author is traditionally identified as John the apostle, and the audience appears to include both Jewish and Gentile believers who needed to understand Jesus within Israel’s story. In this chapter Jesus is in sharp debate with religious authorities who object to his healing on the Sabbath and to his claim to be one with the Father.
Verses 43 to 47 form a tightly linked argument. Jesus says he came in his Father’s name and was not received, while others who come in their own name are welcomed. He then says that Moses, the very one they trust, will be the witness against them. Verse 46 is the centre of that reasoning, so it reads most clearly as a charge that their trust in Moses should have led them to Jesus.
Key Phrases in John 5:46
Luke 24:27
Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
(WEB)
On the road to Emmaus, the risen Jesus explains from Moses and all the prophets the things concerning himself. This shows the same conviction that the Hebrew Scriptures testify to him, and it gives a concrete picture of Jesus teaching this truth.
Deuteronomy 18:15
The LORD your God will raise up to you a prophet from among you, of your brothers, like me. You shall listen to him.

Moses himself speaks of a prophet God will raise up from among the people. Early Christians read this promise as fulfilled in Jesus, which helps explain why Jesus can say that Moses wrote about him.
A Short Prayer From John 5:46
Lord, thank you for the Scriptures that have been given to us over many generations. Open my eyes as I read the books of Moses and the prophets, so that I see you more clearly in every page. Forgive me for the times I have honored your Word in name while missing the One it points toward. Help me to believe the testimony of Moses and to receive the Son you sent into the world, that my faith may be rooted in him. Amen.
