John 8:44 tells us that Jesus is speaking to people who reject him, and he says their deepest allegiance is to the devil rather than to God. The verse also explains that the devil is a liar and a killer from the start, with nothing true in him, so lying is part of his nature. Jesus says this to a group of Jewish listeners in Jerusalem during a sharp argument recorded in John 8.

You are of your father, the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn’t stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.

What John 8:44 Means

Jesus begins with a claim about parentage: “You are of your father, the devil.” In the ancient Jewish world, saying someone was “of” a father meant they shared that father’s character and loyalties. Jesus is not describing physical descent. He is saying that the way these listeners were choosing to act showed whose influence they had taken on, and that they were carrying out the desires of the one who opposes God.

Next he describes the devil as “a murderer from the beginning” who “doesn’t stand in the truth.” This points back to the devil’s role in bringing death and deception into the human story, and the picture of someone who cannot stand firmly on what is real. The verse then says there is “no truth in him,” and that when he lies he speaks out of his own nature, since he is “the father of lies.” The verse teaches who the devil is and how he works. It does not give a full account of every spiritual battle, and it does not tell us the exact moment the devil began to rebel.

The Context of John 8:44

The Gospel of John was written by the apostle John, traditionally identified as the disciple whom Jesus loved, and it was likely composed toward the end of the first century. Its audience included both Jewish and Gentile believers, and the book is careful to show that Jesus is the Son of God and the source of life. In chapter 8, Jesus is in a long dispute with people who claim Abraham and God as their father. They take offense at his claim to speak for God and to give freedom through the truth.

Just before verse 44, Jesus says that if God were their father they would love him, since he came from God. Verse 44 is his reply to their hostility: their rejection of his words shows a different parentage. Verses 45 through 47 then return to the same theme, showing that those who belong to God hear God’s words. Read in this setting, verse 44 is not a random insult. It is part of Jesus’ argument that truth and falsehood reveal who a person truly belongs to.

Key Phrases in John 8:44

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

In this verse Jesus declares that he is the way, the truth, and the life. Reading it beside John 8:44 shows the contrast: the devil has no truth in him, while Jesus is the very source of truth and the path to life.

Ephesians 4:25

Therefore putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members of one another.

Paul calls believers to put away falsehood and speak the truth with one another. It shows how the truth Jesus embodies should shape everyday honesty among Christians.

A Short Prayer From John 8:44

Father, you are the God of truth, and I thank you that in Jesus I can know what is real. Some days I am tempted to bend the truth to make life easier or to look better to others. Search my heart and show me where I have let deception take root. Give me courage to speak honestly and to love the people around me with words that are true and kind.

Thank you that Jesus came to set us free from every lie and every power of death. Help me to belong to you in what I say and what I do. Let my words reflect your character today. Amen.
