BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Joshua 3:13 tells Israel that when the priests carrying the ark step into the Jordan River, the flood will stop and the water will pile up upstream. Joshua speaks these words to the people of Israel as they prepare to cross into the land God promised them, and he is describing a sign that will show them God is present and in control. The verse looks ahead to a moment that has not yet happened, and it ties God’s power to the simple act of obedience by the priests.

It shall be that when the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan will be cut off. The waters that come down from above shall stand in one heap.”

What Joshua 3:13 Means

The verse begins with a condition: “when the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the LORD… rest in the waters of the Jordan.” The priests are not told to wait for the river to calm down or to build a bridge. They are told to walk in while the river is still at flood. The sign begins with their faithful step, not with the water’s cooperation.

Next the verse names who is doing the work: “the LORD, the Lord of all the earth.” This title reminds Israel that the God who will part the river is not a local deity tied to one riverbank. He is the Creator and ruler of every land, including the land ahead of them. The ark stands for his presence among his people, so the priests carry more than a box. They carry the reminder that the Lord himself is moving with them.

The verse promises that “the waters of the Jordan will be cut off” and that the upstream water “shall stand in one heap.” It is a promise of a specific, visible act at a specific moment. It does not promise that every hardship on the road ahead will vanish, or that Israel will never face another fight. It promises that God will do what he has said at the time he has said it, and that the people will see it.

The Context of Joshua 3:13

Joshua is the book named for Israel’s leader after Moses, and it records the conquest and settlement of Canaan. Tradition credits Joshua with writing much of the material, though the book in its final form likely took shape later, and the audience is the generation of Israelites entering the land after forty years in the wilderness. They are hearing the story of their own near future, and they need to know that the God who led their parents out of Egypt is the same God who will lead them in.

The verses just before this one (3:10 to 12) explain the purpose of the sign. Joshua tells the people, “By this you shall know that the living God is among you,” and he names the nations they will face. Verse 13 is the announcement, and verses 14 to 16 record its fulfillment, when the waters upstream stand still and the people pass over near Jericho. Reading the verse alongside what follows shows that Joshua was not guessing or hoping. He was describing an event that the story then shows happening exactly as spoken.

Key Phrases in Joshua 3:13

Exodus 14:21

Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.

(WEB)

This verse records the earlier parting of the sea when Moses stretched out his hand. It shows the same God acting in a similar way at the start of Israel’s journey, so reading it alongside Joshua 3:13 reveals a pattern of faithfulness across generations.

Joshua 4:23-24

23 For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you, until you had crossed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up from before us, until we had crossed over; 24 that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD’s hand is mighty; that you may fear the LORD your God forever.’”

(WEB)

These verses explain the purpose of the crossing: so that all the peoples of the earth would know the hand of the LORD is mighty. Reading them with Joshua 3:13 shows that the sign was meant to be remembered and passed on.

A Short Prayer From Joshua 3:13

Lord, you are the God of all the earth, and nothing in creation is beyond your reach. When I stand at the edge of something I cannot control, help me to take the next faithful step even when I do not see how the way will open. Remind me that the rivers in my life are under your hand, and that you have not forgotten the promises you have made. Give me steady feet and a quiet heart, and let me see your power in the moments you choose to reveal it. Amen.
