Joshua 4:16 is a short command from the LORD to Joshua, telling him to instruct the priests carrying the ark of the testimony to step up out of the Jordan River. The verse is a logistical instruction, but it carries real weight: it marks the moment the nation of Israel crosses into the promised land under God’s direct direction. The LORD speaks to Joshua, who then passes the order on to the priests.

“Command the priests who bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of the Jordan.”

What Joshua 4:16 Means

The phrase “Command the priests” shows that Joshua is not acting on his own initiative. He is the leader, but the LORD is still the one giving directions, and Joshua’s task is to relay and carry them out. This reflects a pattern found throughout the book: Israel’s success depends on listening to God and following His word closely.

The “ark of the testimony” refers to the sacred chest that held the covenant tablets and stood as the visible sign of God’s presence among His people. Its priests carried it with reverence, and their movements mattered. When the verse says they should “come up out of the Jordan,” it describes the priests stepping out of the riverbed onto dry land, which signals that the crossing is complete.

What the verse does not do is promise that every difficulty ahead will vanish. It records one step in a larger story. The verse tells us what God asked at a specific moment, not a general rule about how life will unfold for anyone who prays.

The Context of Joshua 4:16

The Book of Joshua is traditionally attributed to Joshua himself, though it likely took its final shape later, and it records Israel’s entry into Canaan after the death of Moses. Its first audience would have been an Israelite community that had grown up in the wilderness and was now preparing to take possession of the land God had promised to their ancestors.

Just before this verse, the chapter describes about forty thousand armed men crossing over before the LORD, and it notes that the people revered Joshua as they had revered Moses. Just after, the waters of the Jordan return to their normal flow once the priests reach the bank, and the people camp at Gilgal. Read in that setting, Joshua 4:16 is part of a carefully ordered act of obedience, where each detail of the crossing points back to God’s faithfulness.

Key Phrases in Joshua 4:16

Joshua 3:17

The priests who bore the ark of the LORD’s covenant stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan; and all Israel crossed over on dry ground, until all the nation had passed completely over the Jordan.

(WEB)

This verse describes the priests standing firm in the middle of the Jordan while the people crossed on dry ground. It shows the same priests and the same ark at the heart of the crossing, so reading it just before Joshua 4:16 helps you see the sequence of obedience that leads to the moment the priests are told to come up.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses speaks these words to Israel before they enter the land, encouraging them to be strong because the LORD goes with them. The promise of God’s presence sits behind every command in Joshua, including the instruction to the priests, so this verse helps explain why Israel could move forward with courage.

A Short Prayer From Joshua 4:16

Lord, thank you for speaking clearly to Your people and for giving them direction when the way ahead was uncertain. Help me to listen for Your voice in the decisions I face and to trust You enough to take the next faithful step. When I cannot see the whole path, remind me that You are leading, and that You have gone before me into every place I have to cross. Give me willing hands and a steady heart to do what You ask. Amen.
