Luke 4:40 describes the evening after a long day of teaching and healing in Capernaum, when a crowd of people with all kinds of illness came to Jesus, and he healed each one personally, placing his hands on them. The verse shows Jesus giving individual attention to every person brought before him, with no one turned away. Luke, the author, writes it as a narrator describing what Jesus did, not as a speech.
When the sun was setting, all those who had any sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.

What Luke 4:40 Means
The phrase “when the sun was setting” marks the end of the Sabbath. Jewish law did not allow carrying the sick on the Sabbath, so the moment the day was over, families brought their sick to Jesus. The timing tells you that the people had been waiting, and that they came as soon as they were allowed.
“All those who had any sick with various diseases” means the range of need was wide. Luke does not limit the illnesses to one kind. Fever, paralysis, and other conditions are all included, and so is the crowd’s willingness to bring anyone they knew who was suffering. Then comes the detail that Jesus “laid his hands on every one of them.” Each person received direct, personal contact from him.
The verse describes what Jesus did on that evening. It does not state a rule that every sick person will be healed today, and it does not tell you how God will act in your situation. What it does reveal is Jesus’ compassion, his authority over illness, and his willingness to meet each person where they are.
The Context of Luke 4:40
Luke wrote his Gospel to a Gentile reader named Theophilus, and he arranged his account to show who Jesus is and what he came to do. Just before this verse, Jesus has rebuked a fever in Simon’s house, and Simon’s mother-in-law is healed at once. Verse 40 expands that single healing into a wider picture of Jesus meeting the needs of many people.
Right after the verse, demons leave people and cry out that Jesus is the Son of God, and Jesus refuses to let them speak. Then, in verse 43, he says he must preach the good news of God’s kingdom to other towns. Read this way, the healings in verse 40 are signs that the kingdom is breaking into ordinary life, and they are not the whole purpose of his mission.

This verse shows Jesus inviting weary people to come to him for rest. Like Luke 4:40, it pictures people bringing their burdens to Jesus and finding him ready to receive them personally.
Mark 1:32-34
32 At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to him all who were sick, and those who were possessed by demons. 33 All the city was gathered together at the door. 34 He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. He didn’t allow the demons to speak, because they knew him.

Mark gives a parallel account of the evening healings after the Sabbath ended. Reading it alongside Luke 4:40 shows how the Gospel writers each highlight the same compassion of Jesus from slightly different angles.
A Short Prayer From Luke 4:40
Lord Jesus, you welcomed the sick who came to you when the day’s work was done, and you gave each one your personal attention. I bring you the people and situations on my heart tonight, especially the ones where I feel helpless. Help me trust your compassion when I cannot see the outcome, and teach me to come to you with the ordinary needs of my life as well as the big ones. Let me rest in the knowledge that you are near and that you care for each person who calls on your name. Amen.
