Mark 5:25 introduces a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years, and it sets up one of the most personal healing stories in the Gospels. The verse is a narrator’s introduction, not a teaching, so its meaning comes from the story that follows. Mark tells us who she is and how long her suffering lasted before Jesus comes into the scene.

A certain woman, who had an issue of blood for twelve years…

What Mark 5:25 Means

The verse begins with “A certain woman,” which tells you Mark does not name her. In a crowded scene full of named people, such as Jairus the synagogue ruler, her anonymity makes her a representative of every person who has suffered quietly. Her name is not the point. Her condition is.

“Who had an issue of blood for twelve years” describes a long, chronic illness. Mark does not say what caused it, and he is not trying to diagnose her. The number twelve, which matches the twelve years of the girl in the next part of the story, stresses how long she has endured it. The verse does not promise that every long illness will end, but it does show Mark taking long suffering seriously.

The Context of Mark 5:25

The Gospel of Mark was written in a fast, direct style, and it was most likely written for a Gentile audience, probably in or near Rome, with an emphasis on what Jesus does more than what he says. Mark often places one story inside another, and here the woman’s story is wrapped around the story of Jairus’s dying daughter. Verses 22 and 23 show Jairus begging Jesus for help, and verses 27 and 28 show the woman reaching for Jesus’s clothes while the crowd presses in.

Read in that setting, Mark 5:25 is the hinge of the whole passage. The woman’s long illness makes her faith in the touch more striking, because she has already tried many physicians and spent everything she had, and she is worse for it. Her twelve years become the backdrop that makes her act of trust, in a moment of desperation, stand out so clearly.

Key Phrases in Mark 5:25

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

This verse says the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. It pairs well with Mark 5:25 because both show God drawing near to people who have been hurt for a long time. The woman in Mark’s story is a living picture of the lowly and worn-down person this psalm describes.

Hebrews 4:16

Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.

(WEB)

This verse invites believers to come boldly to the throne of grace to receive mercy and find help in time of need. It connects with Mark 5:25 by showing that the same kind of approach the woman made, pressing toward Jesus in her need, is something Christians are invited to do with confidence in God.

A Short Prayer From Mark 5:25

Lord, I think of the woman who had suffered for twelve years and had spent everything she had. I bring you the long seasons of my own trouble, the things I have tried and the hopes that have grown tired. Help me to come to you honestly, without pretending I am stronger than I am. Let me trust that you see me in the crowd, and that my need is not too small or too late for your care. Amen.
