Mark 5:30 records Jesus noticing that healing power had left him, and then asking the crowd who had touched his clothes. The verse shows that Jesus was aware of what had happened in a real, personal way, and that he chose to pause and find the one who had reached out to him in faith. Jesus speaks these words in the middle of a crowd pressing around him in a village by the Sea of Galilee, and the question is addressed to everyone near him.

Immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd, and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

What Mark 5:30 Means

The verse begins with “Immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself.” The word “immediately” is one of Mark’s favorite words, and it signals speed and urgency in his account. “Perceiving in himself” means Jesus knew inwardly that something had happened, without anyone telling him. The power that had gone out from him is the healing ability that flowed out of Jesus when the woman was made well.

Then he “turned around in the crowd, and asked.” Jesus did not keep walking. He stopped, turned, and looked for the person. The question, “Who touched my clothes?” is a real question. Jesus wanted to know who had reached out to him, and the verse does not promise that every touch of faith will be noticed in that exact way.

The verse does not explain how the power worked or give a formula for receiving healing. It shows Jesus responding to one person’s faith in a specific moment. Readers should not take it as a promise that a touch of Jesus’s clothing brings healing in every case, since the healing here came from Jesus’s own authority and the woman’s trust.

The Context of Mark 5:30

The Gospel of Mark is traditionally attributed to John Mark, a companion of Peter, and was written for a largely Gentile audience, probably in Rome. Mark moves quickly from one event to the next, and his narrative is full of action, crowds, and sudden moments. Chapter 5 contains several healing and confrontation stories close together, showing Jesus’s authority over the natural world, demons, illness, and death.

The verses just before this one describe the woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years and had spent all her money on doctors without improvement. Verses 31 to 33 follow with the disciples’ puzzled reply and the woman coming forward, trembling, to tell Jesus the whole truth. Seeing the verse within that sequence shows that the question was not a rebuke. It opened the way for her to speak openly before Jesus and the crowd.

Key Phrases in Mark 5:30

Hebrews 4:16

Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.

(WEB)

This verse invites believers to approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, which matches the woman’s bold step to come forward and speak the truth before Jesus.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

This verse says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted, which fits the way Jesus turned toward a suffering woman who was trembling and afraid.

A Short Prayer From Mark 5:30

Lord Jesus, you know when power goes out from you and when someone reaches toward you in need. Thank you for stopping in the middle of the crowd to find the person who trusted you. Help me to come to you honestly, even when I feel weak or unnoticed. Let me remember that you see me and want to hear what I have to say. Amen.
