Mark 5:32 tells us that Jesus stopped in the middle of a crowd and searched for the person who had touched him, because he knew healing power had left his body and he wanted that person identified. The verse matters because it shows Jesus refusing to let a hidden, healed woman slip away unnoticed. Jesus speaks this line in the Gospel of Mark, describing his own action as he pushes through a large crowd on the way to Jairus’s house.

He looked around to see her who had done this thing.

What Mark 5:32 Means

The phrase “He looked around” describes a deliberate act. Jesus did not simply keep walking while the crowd jostled him. He turned, scanned the faces around him, and waited. Mark wants the reader to see that Jesus was paying close attention to a single person in a moving mass of people.

The phrase “to see her” is the heart of the verse. Jesus was not looking for a random touch or a rule-follower he could blame. He was looking for a particular woman, someone he could see and know. The verse suggests that God notices individuals even when they are unnoticed by everyone around them.

The phrase “who had done this thing” refers to the woman’s act of reaching out in faith to touch his clothing, which the previous verses describe in detail. The verse does not promise that every touch of faith will be met with the same response, and it does not explain the mechanics of how healing power works. It shows Jesus taking the initiative to find the one who reached for him.

The Context of Mark 5:32

The Gospel of Mark is traditionally attributed to John Mark, a companion of Peter, and it was likely written for a Gentile audience in the Roman world. Mark moves quickly from one event to the next, and he often highlights Jesus acting with urgency and authority. This fast pace shapes the way the healing of the bleeding woman and the raising of Jairus’s daughter appear side by side in chapter 5.

Just before verse 32, the woman has been healed the moment she touched Jesus’s clothes, and Jesus has sensed that power left him. Just after verse 32, the woman comes forward trembling and tells him the whole truth, and Jesus speaks to her with tenderness and calls her daughter. Read in this setting, the verse is the pivot point where a hidden healing becomes a personal encounter, which changes how the entire scene feels.

Key Phrases in Mark 5:32

Psalm 139:1-4

1 The LORD, you have searched me, and you know me. 2 You know my sitting down and my rising up. You perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 For there is not a word on my tongue, but, behold, the LORD, you know it altogether.

This psalm celebrates God’s complete knowledge of the person who prays, from sitting down to rising up. It parallels Mark 5:32 by showing that Jesus’s searching gaze in the crowd reflects a deeper truth about how fully God sees each individual.

Luke 8:45-48

45 Jesus said, “Who touched me?” When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes press and jostle you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone did touch me, for I perceived that power has gone out of me.” 47 When the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared to him in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. 48 He said to her, “Daughter, cheer up. Your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”

Luke records the same episode and includes Jesus saying that he felt power go out from him. Reading it alongside Mark 5:32 gives a fuller picture of the woman’s faith and the personal conversation that followed.

A Short Prayer From Mark 5:32

Lord Jesus, you turned in the crowd and looked for the one who reached out to you in need. I bring you the things I have kept hidden, the worries and weaknesses I have not wanted others to see. Help me trust that you notice me in every crowd and every quiet room. Let me come to you honestly, as she did, and hear you speak my name with tenderness. Amen.
