Matthew 3:15 records Jesus telling John the Baptist to go ahead and baptize him, because doing it this way is the proper way to carry out everything God requires. Jesus is answering John, who had objected that he himself needed to be baptized by Jesus rather than the other way around.

But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.

What Matthew 3:15 Means

The word “allow” in the verse is a request, not a command. Jesus is asking John to permit this for now. John had good reason to hesitate. His baptism was a call to repentance, and he understood that he was the lesser one, the one who would be followed by someone far greater. Jesus does not argue the point. He simply says this is the fitting way forward.

The phrase “fulfill all righteousness” is the center of the verse. Righteousness here means doing what God asks, living rightly before him in full obedience. Jesus is saying that his baptism is part of that obedience. It is not a sign that he has sinned, since he was without sin, but a step in fully doing what the Father intends. The verse does not promise that every believer will understand God’s plan at once, nor does it explain every detail of why baptism mattered for Jesus. It shows a willing submission to God’s will, even when the moment looks strange.

The Context of Matthew 3:15

Matthew wrote his Gospel, traditionally attributed to the tax collector who became one of the twelve apostles, for a community that was largely Jewish and wanted to see how Jesus fulfilled the Scriptures. The passage sits just after John’s fiery preaching about the coming judge, who will separate the wheat from the chaff. Matthew 3:13 introduces Jesus coming from Galilee to be baptized, so the reader is already waiting to see how this meeting unfolds.

The verses that follow show what happens after Jesus is baptized. The heavens open, the Spirit descends like a dove, and a voice from heaven declares Jesus to be the beloved Son. Read alongside verse 15, this sequence shows that Jesus’ willingness to fulfill righteousness is met by the Father’s clear approval. The obedience comes first, and the affirmation follows it.

Key Phrases in Matthew 3:15

Romans 6:4

We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.

Paul explains that baptism pictures our dying and rising with Christ. Reading it alongside Matthew 3:15 helps us see how Jesus’ own baptism points toward the new life that his followers share in him.

Hebrews 5:8-9

8 Though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered. 9 Having been made perfect, he became to all of those who obey him the author of eternal salvation…

This passage describes Jesus learning obedience through what he suffered and becoming the source of eternal salvation. It deepens the picture of Jesus’ willing submission to the Father that Matthew 3:15 introduces.

A Short Prayer From Matthew 3:15

Father, you know how often I want to understand every step before I take it. Thank you that Jesus embraced your plan without hesitation, even when it was not what others expected. Help me to trust your timing and to recognize the fitting steps you place before me. Where I hesitate, give me a willing heart like his. Keep me close to you as I seek to live rightly before you each day. Amen.
