Matthew 8:28 describes Jesus arriving on the far shore of the Sea of Galilee, where two men controlled by demons come out from among the tombs to meet him. The verse sets the scene for one of the Gospel’s most striking encounters: a place of death, two desperate men, and a danger so severe that travelers avoided the road entirely. Matthew, the writer, is recording these events for a community that needed to see who Jesus is and what he has authority over.

When he came to the other side, into the country of the Gergesenes, two people possessed by demons met him there, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that nobody could pass that way.

What Matthew 8:28 Means

The verse opens with “When he came to the other side,” which places the story immediately after Jesus calmed a storm on the lake. The disciples had just watched the wind and waves obey him, so the reader is already wondering what kind of person can do that. The move across the water takes Jesus into Gentile territory, the region of the Gergesenes, a area where the people were not Jewish.

The phrase “two people possessed by demons” describes men whose lives were taken over by forces hostile to God and to human wellbeing. The tombs were the places where the dead were buried, so these men lived among death and were cut off from ordinary community. The words “exceedingly fierce, so that nobody could pass that way” show that they were a real threat to anyone traveling nearby. The verse does not promise that every hard situation will end quickly, but it does show that no force, however violent, stands outside the reach of Jesus.

The Context of Matthew 8:28

The Gospel of Matthew was written to a community that knew the Hebrew Scriptures well and wanted to understand how Jesus fit within God’s larger story. Tradition attributes the book to Matthew, one of the twelve disciples, though scholars debate the exact details of authorship. Matthew arranges his material around Jesus’ teaching and actions, and chapters 8 and 9 present a series of miracles that display his power over sickness, nature and spiritual forces.

Verse 28 comes directly after the account of the storm in verses 23 to 27, where the disciples ask whether Jesus cares that they are perishing. In verses 29 to 31, the demons immediately recognize Jesus as the Son of God and beg not to be tormented. Reading the verse in that sequence shows that the storm and the demoniac encounter are linked: in both, Jesus meets chaos with calm authority, and those who opposed him had to acknowledge his power.

Key Phrases in Matthew 8:28

Psalm 107:10-14

10 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron, 11 because they rebelled against the words of God, and condemned the counsel of the Most High. 12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labor. They fell down, and there was no one to help. 13 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. 14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke away their chains.

This psalm describes people who sit in darkness and bondage and then cry out to the Lord, who brings them out of their distress. It echoes the pattern of desperate need followed by deliverance that runs through the story in Matthew 8.

A Short Prayer From Matthew 8:28

Lord Jesus, you are the one who calmed the wind and the waves and who walked into the place of fear and death to set people free. I bring to you the areas of my life that feel dangerous, dark, or closed off, the places where I have stopped going because I am afraid. Give me the courage to draw near to you in those places, and help me trust that your authority reaches even there. Thank you that you meet people in their deepest distress and do not turn away. Amen.
