This is a morning prayer written for small groups, the kind of gathering that meets in a living room, a classroom, a church basement or on a video call before the workday starts. Pray it together at the start of your meeting, or before your group disperses into the day, so that everyone has a shared place to begin. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own requests into the spaces it leaves open.
Morning Prayers for Small Groups
Lord, we come to you before the noise of the day has fully started. Some of us have slept well, and some of us have not. Some of us are carrying a worry we have not yet named out loud, and some are glad simply to be here. We ask you to meet each person in this circle exactly where they are. Quiet the restless thoughts, and give us the sense that we are not alone in this room or in the hours ahead.
We bring you the people we will see today: the coworker who is struggling, the child who needs patience at breakfast, the friend waiting on news from a doctor, the stranger we will pass on the road. Give us eyes to notice them and a willingness to be useful. Where we are tempted to rush past someone, slow us down. Where we feel we have nothing to give, remind us that you supply what we lack. Help us speak kindly, listen well and keep our promises.
Father, we also ask that this group would be a real place of trust. Let what is said here stay safe, let us tell the truth without fear, and let us pray for one another long after we leave. Keep us faithful to the things we have committed to, and let our work and our words point to you. Go before us into this day, walk beside us through every hour, and bring us home at evening with thankful hearts. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, we are glad to begin this day with you. Be near to each of us as we step into our tasks and our conversations. Give us patience when we are tired, honesty when it would be easier to hide, and kindness toward the people we meet. Help us carry one another’s burdens today, and let this small group be a steady place of encouragement. We trust you with all that lies ahead. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
Pray this as the group starts its day, thanking God that his mercy has not run out overnight. Ask him to make each morning feel new, so that nobody begins the day already worn down by yesterday.
Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”
(WEB)
Before the group starts talking over the day’s schedule, pause and let this verse settle the room. Invite each person to breathe slowly and remember that God is in charge of what the day will bring.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
Pray this over the decisions people face at work or at home. Ask God to guide the small choices that feel ordinary but shape the whole day.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Use this verse to bring anxieties into the open within the group. Have each person name one worry, then pray together that God’s peace would guard those hearts and minds.
Colossians 3:23
And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…
(WEB)
Pray this for the work each person will do today, whether paid, unpaid, or simply the tasks of caring for others. Ask God to help everyone work with care, knowing that the Lord is the one they ultimately serve.
How to Pray This Prayer
Gather the group about ten minutes before everyone needs to leave, ideally in the same chair or spot each week so the habit feels familiar. Sit close enough to join hands or to rest a hand on a shoulder if people are comfortable with that. Read the main prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph so that anyone can add a name or a request silently or aloud before continuing.
If your group meets online, ask each person to say their name before the prayer begins and to read a single paragraph in turn. Someone can also keep a simple list of the requests people share, so that the group can pick them up again the next morning. Whoever leads can close by asking each person to name one specific thing they will do today to act on what they have prayed.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless each one of you and keep you through the day ahead. May he make his face shine upon you and give you grace where you need it most. May he steady your steps, strengthen your hands for the work in front of you, and bring you back together with gladness when the day is done.
