This night prayer for compassion is written for the end of the day, when your heart is tired and you want to release the people you have helped, hurt, or simply failed to notice. You can pray it before bed, while lying still in the dark, or at the kitchen table after the lights are off. Read it aloud exactly as written, or let it be a starting point and speak your own words where your day left a mark.

Night Prayer for Compassion

Lord, the day is over, and I bring it to you as it actually went. Some of my words were sharper than they needed to be. I hurried past people who were carrying more than they showed me. I was tired, and tiredness made me easy to annoy and slow to listen. Forgive me where I was hard, and show me where I missed a chance to be gentle.

Soften my heart tonight, especially toward the people who are difficult to love. Let me remember the coworker who snapped because she is worried about her mother, the child who would not stop talking because he was lonely, the neighbor whose face looked closed and unhappy. Give me eyes that notice pain before it turns into anger, and a patient spirit when I cannot see the reason for someone’s struggle. Remind me that everyone I met today has a story I know nothing about.

Hold the people I am worried about tonight. Be near the sick, the grieving, the lonely, and those who are awake when they should be resting. Guard them through the dark hours and let them wake to a little more hope than they went to sleep with. As I rest, keep my own heart open, so that tomorrow I can offer mercy as easily as I breathe. Thank you for showing mercy to me again and again. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am too tired for a long prayer tonight. Forgive me for the impatience I showed today, and open my eyes to the person who needs kindness tomorrow. Give me a gentle heart, and watch over those who are hurting while I sleep. Let me rest knowing that your mercy is larger than my failures. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel you have run out of patience. Thank God that his compassion does not run dry at the end of a long day, and ask him to renew your own compassion in the same way.

Colossians 3:12

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance…

(WEB)

Use this verse to review your day honestly. Ask God to help you put on tenderness and kindness in the places where you were rough, and name one person you want to treat more gently tomorrow.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Let this verse shape what you ask for in prayer. Ask God to make you someone who loves mercy and walks humbly, not someone who only feels sorry in private and then forgets.

Matthew 5:7

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for yourself and for the people who have wronged you today. Ask for the grace to show mercy, trusting that Jesus means what he says about the merciful receiving mercy.

Psalm 103:13

Like a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.

(WEB)

Use this psalm at bedtime to picture God’s fatherly tenderness toward you. Let it give you permission to rest, and ask him to teach you to be that kind of tender parent or friend to someone else.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last quiet minutes before sleep, after the phone is down and the lights are low. If you share a room or a bed, you can pray it silently and let the words settle you. Some people find it helpful to sit on the edge of the bed with their hands open in their lap, which makes it easier to let the day go.

If you have a family, pray it together at bedtime and ask each person to name one moment from the day when they saw kindness or needed it. You can also write down the name of someone you want to pray for on a slip of paper and leave it on your nightstand. Anyone else who loves you could pray the same words over you, too.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who never tires keep watch over you tonight. May he soften every hard edge the day left behind and fill your heart with the mercy you have received. Rest well, and may you wake to be a little more gentle with the people God has placed in your path.
