BIBLEREADER // ELIAS NELSON

This night prayer for courage is for the end of the day, when worry tends to grow louder in the quiet and fear feels heavier than it did in the light. Pray it at bedtime, while lying down, or in the minutes before you turn out the lamp. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the specific fears you are carrying tonight.

Night Prayer for Courage

Father, the day is ending and I am bringing it to You. Some of it went well, and I thank You for those moments. Some of it did not, and I am tired of carrying the parts that weighed on me. I release the conversation that went badly, the decision I still cannot make, and the things I could not fix. Take them from my hands tonight, because I cannot hold them and sleep too.

Lord, I am afraid of what tomorrow might bring. I am afraid of the phone call I may get, the test results I am waiting on, the people I love who are struggling, and my own weakness when I am stretched thin. Give me courage that does not depend on my feeling brave. Let me remember that You are awake while I sleep, that You have already walked into tomorrow, and that nothing arrives there without first passing through Your hands. Guard my heart and my mind through the dark hours.

Be my shelter tonight. Stand watch over the people I love, over the house I live in, and over me as I rest. When I wake, let my first thought be that You are near and that I am not facing the day alone. I trust You with what I cannot control. Give me enough courage for the next step and enough peace to close my eyes. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and afraid, and I do not have the words for everything tonight. You know what I am carrying. Hold me while I rest, and give me courage for tomorrow only when tomorrow comes. Let me sleep knowing You are awake and watching over me. Thank You for being near. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, letting it settle your body as much as your thoughts. Naming God as the one who makes you safe at night turns your attention from what might go wrong toward the One who keeps watch while you sleep.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

This verse describes waking after a night of uncertainty and finding the Lord still holding you. Pray it as a request that morning will bring the same sustaining presence you are asking for now.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God spoke these words to Joshua before a frightening task, and they were meant to steady him in the face of fear. Pray them over the specific thing that is making you afraid, and ask the Lord to remind you that he goes with you.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this verse to bring your anxious thoughts into the open before God. Speak back to him the fears you named earlier, and let the promise of his presence and strength answer each one.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul moves from anxiety to prayer and then to peace in these two verses. Pray through them slowly, giving God each worry as you name it, and ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the bed where you sleep, with the lights low and your phone set aside or charging across the room. Some people find it helps to sit up for a minute first, breathe slowly, and name one thing from the day they are grateful for before beginning. Reading the prayer aloud makes it harder for your mind to wander off into tomorrow’s list.

If your hands are restless, hold something small, such as a folded blanket, a cup of water, or your own wrist, and let the prayer keep time with your breathing. You can also pray it with a spouse, a roommate, or a friend by phone, taking turns with each paragraph. Being prayed for out loud often makes courage feel closer than it did when you carried it alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps you awake in the dark also keep you through it. May he quiet the fear that comes at night and replace it with a steady courage that lasts into the morning. May you rest in the knowledge that you are held, you are known, and you do not have to be brave on your own tonight.
