This night prayer is for anyone who goes to bed carrying fear, uncertainty or a task that feels too big for them. Pray it in the evening, once the day’s noise has quieted and you are ready to hand the next morning to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your fears are more specific.
Night Prayer for Finding Courage
Lord, the day is ending and I am still carrying things I did not expect to carry. There was the conversation I dreaded, the decision I keep turning over, and the quiet worry that I am not enough for what is ahead. Thank you that none of these things surprised you. You saw each one coming before I did, and you have not left me to face them alone tonight.
Be my courage while I sleep, Father. Where I feel weak, be my strength. Where my mind races toward every what-if, steady it and quiet it. Guard my heart and my family under your watch through the night, and let my rest be deep enough that I wake up ready to meet the morning rather than dreading it. Help me remember that courage is not the absence of fear but trust in you when fear is present.
Thank you for the ways you have already been faithful today, even in small things. I release the outcomes into your hands now and ask only that you give me the next step when morning comes. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired and afraid tonight. Take this fear from my hands and hold it for me. Give me enough courage for tomorrow and let me sleep in your peace. Watch over me and the people I love while I rest. Thank you for being with me even when I cannot feel you. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Pray this verse as you lie down, letting it remind you that your rest does not depend on having every problem solved. Thank God that he keeps you safe while you sleep, and ask him to settle the part of you that is still on alert.
Joshua 1:9
Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
(WEB)
This is the verse God gave Joshua before he led Israel into a frightening new season. Read it slowly and personalize it, asking God to remind you that his presence goes with you into whatever tomorrow requires.
Psalm 27:1
The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?
(WEB)
Use this verse to name what you fear most tonight. Then pray that the Lord would be your light and your stronghold, so that your fears feel smaller when set beside him.
Isaiah 41:10
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
(WEB)
Let this verse speak directly to your anxiety. Thank God that he promises to strengthen and help you, and ask him to let you rest in that promise instead of rehearsing your worries.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Pray this verse by handing God each worry on your list, one at a time. Ask him to guard your heart and mind with a peace that does not make sense to you yet, but that you can receive as a gift.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time just before you turn out the light, when your phone is charged across the room and the house has gone still. Sit on the edge of your bed or kneel beside it, and keep your hands open in your lap or resting on your knees. Some people find it helps to place one hand over their heart as they pray the line about trusting God when fear is present.
If sleep is hard, read the prayer aloud a second time, slowly, and pause after each sentence to let it sink in. You can also invite someone who shares your home or a close friend to pray it with you, or text them the words so you are praying together across distance. Keep a pen by the bed if a specific fear keeps returning, and jot it down so you can give it to God by name.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord be near to you tonight and steady your heart through the dark hours. May his peace settle over you like a warm blanket, and may he give you courage for every task waiting in the morning. Rest well, knowing you are held.
