BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This night prayer is for those who go to bed still unsure which way to turn, whether it is a decision about work, a relationship, a move, or a question you cannot yet put into words. Pray it in the evening, once the day is quiet and before you lie down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own specifics to God in the same spirit.

Night Prayer for Finding Direction

Lord, the day is ending and I am carrying questions I have not been able to answer. I keep turning over the same options in my mind, weighing what might go wrong and what I might lose. I do not know which path is right, and tonight I am tired of pretending I have it figured out. Thank you that you already see the road ahead, even when I can only see the next step. I bring you this decision, and I ask you to make your will clear to me in your own time.

Father, quiet the noise in my head so I can hear you. Where I have been anxious, give me patience. Where I have been trying to force an answer, teach me to wait. Show me any wrong motives I need to let go of, and give me the honesty to see my own heart clearly. If there is a conversation I should have, a door to open, or a door to close, make that plain to me. Guard my sleep tonight, and let me rest in the truth that you are guiding me even while I sleep.

Thank you for the ways you have led me before, even when I did not understand them then. Help me remember your faithfulness and trust that it will not fail me now. Give me a willing heart to follow when you speak, and the courage to take the next faithful step when morning comes. I release this question into your hands. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I do not know which way to go, and I am too tired to sort it all out tonight. Show me your next step, quiet my worry, and let me rest knowing you hold this decision with me. Keep me safe through the night, and help me wake ready to listen. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray these words slowly, handing over your own understanding of the situation as you go. Ask God to take the paths you have already mapped out and make them straight where they are crooked.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Read this as God speaking directly to you. Ask him to instruct you and teach you the way you should go, and pause to listen for any sense of his guidance before you move on.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel you can see only a few steps ahead. Ask that God’s word would light the next step for you, even if the whole path stays hidden for now.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Bring your confusion to God as a request, not a demand. Ask him to give you wisdom generously, trusting that he delights to answer when we ask in humility.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

Pray this as you go to sleep, asking to hear God’s voice when the day ends. Thank him in advance for the guidance that will come, whether it arrives in a thought, a conversation, or a settled peace.

How to Pray This Prayer

Set aside a few minutes in the evening, after the last task of the day and before you turn off the light. Sit on the edge of your bed or in a chair you use only for rest, and keep something in your hands, such as a pen and a small notebook, so you can jot down any thought or verse that stands out. Read the prayer slowly and pause after each paragraph to let your own honest words rise up.

If you share a home or a life with someone else, consider praying this together or asking a friend or family member to pray it for you. Tell them the decision you are facing so they can lift it up with you. Many people find that the next morning brings clarity more easily after a prayer shared with a trusted companion.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who knows the way before you lead you gently through this night. May he quiet every anxious thought, guard your rest, and give you wisdom for the path that lies ahead. Rest now in his care, and wake to the new morning with a peaceful heart.
