BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This night prayer for perseverance is written for the end of a long day when you are tired of holding on and need to hand your effort, your fear and your unfinished work to God. Pray it at bedtime, in a quiet moment before sleep, or whenever the day has left you running on empty. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.

Night Prayer for Perseverance

Lord, the day is ending, and I am tired in a way that sleep alone does not fix. I have kept going when I wanted to stop, I have answered the same worries again and again, and some of the things I am carrying have no finish line I can see. Thank you that you have watched over every hour of this day, including the ones when I felt I was barely managing. Thank you that you do not grow weary, and that you give strength to those who have none left.

Tonight I release the work that is still undone. Hold the people I am responsible for and the situations that keep me awake. Where I have been tempted to quit, give me the stubborn, quiet faithfulness to take the next small step tomorrow. Guard my mind from replaying every mistake and every fear while I try to rest. Keep my heart steady so that I can face the morning with patience rather than dread. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out, and I do not want to carry this night as well as the day. Take what I could not finish, and keep the people I love in your care while I sleep. Give me enough faith to keep going tomorrow, one honest step at a time. Let your peace settle over me now, and let me rest in knowing that you have not stopped holding on to me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when your strength feels spent. Ask God to renew what you cannot renew yourself, and let the picture of waiting on him replace the pressure to produce.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Pray this when you are tempted to think your efforts have gone unnoticed. Thank God that the harvest belongs to him and that your faithfulness is not wasted in his hands.

Romans 5:3-5

3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: 5 and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

(WEB)

Use this passage to ask God to shape endurance in you, even through hardship you did not choose. Pray that the hope he gives will steady you as the weariness passes.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God as you close your eyes. Thank him that the one who keeps Israel does not slumber, and ask him to keep watch over you through the night.

Hebrews 12:1-2

1 Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

(WEB)

Pray this when the race feels too long. Ask Jesus to keep your eyes on him rather than on the finish line you cannot yet see, trusting him to carry you past what you can bear alone.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed point in your evening, such as after you turn off the lights or once the last task is put away, and pray there each night. If you can, sit on the edge of your bed or kneel beside it, and keep your hands open or resting on your lap. Some people find it helpful to write down the one or two concerns that are weighing most heavily, then place the paper aside as they pray, as a physical sign of handing them over.

You might also pray this with someone who shares your burden, whether a spouse, a friend or a member of your church who knows the road you are walking. Ask them to pray the words over you when you are too tired to say them yourself. Keep the prayer short on nights when you have little left, and let God receive even a single honest sentence as enough.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who never grows weary keep watch over you tonight and give you rest that reaches deep into your soul. May he strengthen your hands for tomorrow’s work and steady your heart for whatever it will bring. May you wake knowing that the one who began a good work in you will faithfully carry it on to completion.
