BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This is a night prayer for wisdom, written for the end of the day when your mind is still turning over decisions, conversations and choices you could not settle before dark. You can pray it aloud exactly as written before you go to bed, or use it as a starting point and put your own concerns into your own words.

Night Prayer for Wisdom

Lord, the day is closing and I bring you what I could not finish or figure out. I carried questions into the kitchen, the car and the meetings, and I did not always know what to do with them. Some of them I still do not know how to answer. Thank you that you see every open decision and every half-formed worry, and that nothing I face is hidden from you.

Give me wisdom for the things I have to decide, both the large ones and the small ones that quietly add up. Help me see what is true and what is only loud. Keep me from rushing to a conclusion because I am tired, and keep me from freezing because I am afraid of getting it wrong. Show me the next faithful step, even if it is only the next step. Quiet the voices that push me toward fear, pride or pretending I have it all together.

Now I lay the day down. I release what I could not control, and I trust you with the parts I still need to understand. Guard my sleep, watch over the people I love, and wake me in the morning with a clearer mind and a willing heart. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and my thoughts are crowded. Give me wisdom for what is in front of me, and show me what to do with it. Settle my mind, guard my rest, and help me trust you with what I cannot see yet. Thank you that you hear me even when my words are few. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a simple request: you lack wisdom, and God gives it generously without holding your failures against you. Ask for it plainly before you close your eyes.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage to hand over the part of the decision that is beyond your understanding. Name the specific choice and ask God to make your paths straight in it.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly as you lie down. Let it remind you that rest is a gift God gives, and that sleep does not depend on having every answer in hand.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you are worrying through the night. Ask God to give you rest, trusting that he cares for what you cannot carry any longer.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Bring this passage into the morning as well as the night. Thank God that his faithfulness renews each day, and ask him to meet you with fresh mercy when you wake.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer in the last quiet minutes before sleep, sitting on the edge of the bed or lying in the dark with the phone face down and out of reach. If your mind wanders, return to one line and say it again slowly. You do not need the right posture or the perfect words to be heard.

You might keep a pen and paper on the nightstand and write down the one decision that is keeping you awake, then pray over that paper with your hand resting on it. A spouse, a close friend or a family member can pray the same words for you, or read them aloud together, which often helps when the decision weighs on more than one person.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you wisdom for what you carry tonight and clarity when morning comes. May he guard your sleep, quiet the anxious thoughts that circle your mind, and remind you that you are held. May his peace settle over your home and your heart until the dawn.
