BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

These night prayers are written for the close of the day, when the house has quieted and the work of the day is finished. They help you hand over what you carried, ask for rest, and place your sleep and your household under God’s care. Pray the main prayer slowly and aloud as written, or let it be a starting point and speak in your own words what is on your heart tonight.

Night Prayers

Lord, the day is ending, and I am glad to bring it to you. You saw every hour of it: the emails I answered, the conversations I wish had gone better, the worries I kept turning over while my hands were busy with other things. I set them down now. Take the parts I did well and receive them with grace, and take the parts I did poorly and cover them with your mercy. Where I was anxious about money, work, or the people I love, quiet my mind so I can stop rehearsing tomorrow’s problems tonight.

Watch over my sleep, Father. Guard the people in this house while they rest, and be near to anyone who lies awake tonight with pain, grief, or fear. Keep the doors locked and the children safe, and let my body rest so I can wake refreshed. Thank you for the small mercies of this day: the warm meal, the kind word, the steady ground under my feet. Whatever tomorrow holds, I trust that you will already be there. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind will not slow down. I give you this day and everything still unfinished in it. Calm my thoughts and keep my family safe through the night. Let me rest in your care so that I can wake and serve you well. Thank you for being awake when I am not. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly before you close your eyes and let each phrase become a sentence of trust. Notice that the psalmist says he lies down and sleeps, which means he chooses rest because he believes God is the one keeping him safe.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this when your mind is racing from the day’s work. It reminds you that striving late into the night is not what God asks, and that he gives rest to those he loves.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this as a prayer of protection over the people you love. Ask God to keep watch over those sleeping in your home while you rest, trusting that he never tires or slumbers.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring the weight you have carried all day to Jesus in prayer. Name the specific burdens you are setting down and let this invitation shape the way you release them.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

End your prayer by thanking God that his mercies are new each morning. Even when the night feels long, pray that you will wake to fresh evidence of his faithfulness.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying these night prayers in the same spot every evening, such as the edge of your bed, a favorite chair, or the kitchen table after the dishes are done. Before you begin, turn off the screen and sit still for a breath or two. Holding a small object you can touch, like a smooth stone or the cool rim of a mug, can help your body settle while your words catch up.

A parent, spouse, or roommate can pray the prayer together with you, taking turns with the lines about the people in the home. You might also read it aloud to a grown child who is struggling to sleep. Keep the prayer short on nights when you are exhausted, and let the shorter version carry you when the longer one feels like too much.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep you in his peace tonight. May he guard your going out and your coming in, and may you wake to a new morning held in his steady love. Rest well, for you are not alone in the dark.
