Philippians 3:9 teaches that a person is made right with God not by their own record of obedience but by faith in Christ, and that this righteousness is a gift that comes from God. Paul wrote these words to the believers in Philippi, a Roman colony in northern Greece, as he described how he had let go of his past achievements to know Christ. The verse explains what Paul gained when he counted his religious credentials as loss.

And be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, that which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith…

What Philippians 3:9 Means

Paul begins by saying that he wants to be found “in him,” meaning united with Christ. He then sets aside a righteousness of his own, the standing he had earned by keeping the law as a devout Pharisee. The verse does not say the law is bad. It says that law-keeping cannot be the foundation of a right relationship with God.

In its place, Paul points to a righteousness that comes “through faith in Christ” and is “from God by faith.” The verse promises that righteousness is received, not manufactured. It does not promise that believers will never struggle or that faith makes life easy. It describes where a person’s standing before God rests: on what Christ has done, received by trust.

The Context of Philippians 3:9

Philippians is a letter Paul wrote from prison, most likely during his Roman imprisonment, and it is one of his warmest letters to a church. In chapter 3 he warns the believers against people who insisted that Gentile Christians must accept circumcision and the law to belong to God. Paul answers by listing his own impressive religious background in verses 5 and 6 and then calling all of it “loss” compared with knowing Christ.

Read in that setting, verse 9 is the climax of Paul’s argument. Just before it, he says he counts everything as refuse so that he may gain Christ. Just after it, he speaks of wanting to know Christ and the power of his resurrection. The verse shows that the reason Paul gave up his old confidence was the righteousness God offers through faith.

Key Phrases in Philippians 3:9

Romans 3:22

Even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all those who believe. For there is no distinction…

(WEB)

Paul makes a parallel point in Romans, explaining that the righteousness of God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. Reading it alongside Philippians 3:9 shows that this was not a passing idea but a central theme of Paul’s teaching about how people are made right with God.

Ephesians 2:8-9

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, that no one would boast.

(WEB)

These verses describe salvation as a gift received through faith rather than earned by works. They express the same conviction found in Philippians 3:9, that human effort cannot secure what God freely gives, and they help clarify why Paul treated his former achievements as something to let go of.

A Short Prayer From Philippians 3:9

Lord, I confess that I often try to build my own standing before you by measuring my good days against my bad ones. Thank you that you have not asked me to prove myself before I can come to you. Help me to rest in the righteousness that comes from you through faith in Christ, and loosen my grip on the things I have trusted for security. Let me be found in him each day, so that my identity is shaped by his faithfulness rather than my performance. Amen.
