BIBLEREADER // ISABELLA WALKER

This is a prayer to pray before a job interview, whether in the car in the parking lot, in the bathroom mirror, or quietly in the waiting room before your name is called. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own worries and hopes into your own words. Either way, it is meant to bring the nerves to God before they take over the conversation.

Prayer Before a Job Interview

Lord, you know how much this matters to me. I have rehearsed my answers, I have ironed the shirt, and I have read the job description until the words blur, but my stomach is still tight and my thoughts keep running ahead of me. Quiet my heart. Remind me that my worth does not rise or fall on the next hour, and that you were with me long before this room existed.

Help me to think clearly when the questions come. If I freeze, bring the right word back to mind. If I talk too much, help me stop and listen. Let me speak honestly about what I have done and what I can do, without bragging and without shrinking myself to fit into the chair. Give the interviewers patience and fairness, and let them see who I really am. Whatever happens, let me leave with my integrity intact and my trust still in you.

Thank you that I do not have to carry this alone. Go before me into that room, sit with me while I wait, and steady my hands. Whether this is the job you have for me or a door you are closing for a better one, I want to walk through it with a grateful heart. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am nervous and I am asking you to calm me. Give me clear thoughts, honest words and a listening ear. Let me be myself and let me trust that you are already at work in this room. Whatever comes next, I belong to you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul’s instruction to bring every worry to God in prayer is a good place to start before an interview. Name the specific fear you have, then thank God for hearing it, and let the peace he gives guard your thoughts as you prepare.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray against leaning only on your own cleverness. Ask God to guide your answers and your decisions, including the ones you will make after the interview, and to make your paths straight even when the outcome is unclear.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

When fear rises in the waiting room, this promise of God’s presence is a steady thing to hold onto. Pray it slowly, letting each phrase remind you that you are not facing the questions by yourself.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Before you speak, ask God for wisdom in a simple, direct way. Pray that he would give you the right words for each question and the good sense to know when to pause, knowing he gives generously to those who ask.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

This verse shifts the focus from impressing people to honoring God in your work. Pray that you would bring integrity and diligence into the conversation, and that your reason for showing up would be faithfulness rather than fear.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it in the last ten minutes before you leave home or in the parking lot, when you still have a few quiet moments and nobody is watching. Keep your hands busy with something small, like holding a folded copy of your résumé, a cup of water, or your car keys, and let each sentence of the prayer slow your breathing. If your mind wanders, return to the line where you stopped and keep going.

You might also ask a friend, a spouse, or a church prayer partner to pray it with you or over you before the interview. Hearing another person speak these words can steady you when your own voice feels shaky. Afterward, take a few minutes to thank God for the opportunity, whatever the result turns out to be.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into that room and stand beside you while you speak. May he give you clarity when your thoughts are crowded, courage when the questions are hard, and grace for yourself when you stumble. May you walk out knowing you were known, prayed for, and held, whatever door opens next.
