This prayer is for the moments when a choice stands in front of you and you are not sure which way to turn, whether it is a job, a move, a relationship, a purchase, or a change in direction. Pray it before you sign, answer, or commit, and again on the morning you need to decide. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Prayer Before an Important Decision

Lord, you see the whole road ahead of me, and I only see the next few steps. I come to you with this decision, and I admit that I am tempted to rely on my own fear, my own hopes, or the opinions of whoever spoke to me last. Quiet my mind so I can hear you. Show me what is true, what is good, and what is simply urgent but not important. Help me weigh the options honestly, including the costs to the people I love and to my own health.

Give me wisdom that is generous and does not scold me for asking. Where I have been careless, forgive me, and where I have been proud, humble me. Remove any pressure that does not come from you, and keep me from deciding out of panic or from a need to please. If one path is closed, let me accept it without bitterness, and if another is open, give me the courage to walk through it when the time is right. Let my choice reflect your character and not only my comfort. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I need wisdom right now and I do not have much time. Slow my heart, clear my thinking, and show me the next faithful step. Guard me from rushing, from freezing, and from deciding only to avoid discomfort. Help me trust that you are already at work in this, and that you will not leave me to figure it out alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the exact choice in front of you and asking God, plainly, for the wisdom you lack. Notice that the promise is for those who ask, which means you are welcome to bring even small, practical questions to him.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When you feel pulled toward your own reasoning, use this passage to surrender it. Pray that you would trust God more than your fears, and that he would make the path straight as you take each step.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and ask God to be your guide in this particular matter. Pray for a teachable heart, ready to notice his direction even when it arrives gently and without drama.

Psalm 25:4-5

4 Show me your ways, the LORD. Teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

(WEB)

Use these lines to ask God to make his ways known to you before you act. Pray that he would teach you his truth and keep you steady, especially when you feel rushed or uncertain.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse as an expectation as much as a request, asking God to speak clearly when you turn left or right. Ask him to make you attentive, so that you recognize his voice among the many other voices you hear.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you are not already exhausted or hurried, such as early in the morning or during a quiet walk. Sit somewhere you can be still, and keep a pen and paper nearby. As you pray, write down the options you are considering and the concerns that keep coming back, so that you can bring them to God specifically instead of in a vague cloud of worry.

It can also help to ask a trusted friend, mentor, or pastor to pray this prayer with you or for you. Invite them to listen for anything you may have missed, and to remind you of your own stated values when your feelings start to drift. Their prayers do not replace your own, but they can steady you while you wait for clarity.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who knows the end from the beginning go before you in this decision. May he give you clear sight, a calm heart, and the courage to act on what you learn. Whatever you choose, may you walk in his peace, knowing you are not alone in the choosing.
