This prayer is for the moment you want to begin again: after a failure you cannot undo, a season that left you worn down, or a quiet sense that you have been carrying yesterday’s mistakes into today. You can pray it in the morning before the day takes hold, late at night when regret is loud, or whenever you feel ready to hand God the pages you wish you could tear out. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.

Prayer for a Fresh Start

Lord, you are the God who makes all things new, and today I come to you asking for a new beginning. Some of what I am carrying is heavy: the words I wish I had not said, the choices that hurt the people I love, the habits that keep pulling me back to the same place. Please forgive me where I have done wrong, and help me to receive that forgiveness without hiding from you or punishing myself over and over again.

I also bring you the things I feel unable to change on my own. I am tired of starting my days already behind, and I do not know how to repair what has been broken. Give me clear eyes to see what matters most today, and steady hands to take the next small step instead of trying to fix everything at once. Let your mercy be new to me this morning, even if it feels like I have heard it a hundred times before.

Make me willing to let go of the old story about who I am and what I deserve. Teach me to trust that you can do in me what I cannot do myself, and that my past does not get the final word. Walk with me through this day, and when I stumble, pick me up and keep me moving toward you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I need a fresh start, and I cannot manufacture one on my own. Forgive what I have done, and cleanse me from the weight of it. Make me new in the way only you can, and give me the courage to take one honest step forward right now. Help me trust that you are already at work in the next hour. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

(WEB)

Paul describes anyone united with Christ as a new creation. Pray this verse by asking God to show you what has truly passed away in your life, and to help you live as though the new thing has already begun.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

In the middle of grief, the writer remembers that God’s mercies are renewed every morning. Pray these lines when you wake up and feel that yesterday still has a hold on you, thanking God that his faithfulness meets you again today.

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

God tells his people not to dwell on former things, because he is doing something new. Pray this passage by bringing God the past you keep replaying and asking him to help you watch for the fresh path he is already making.

Psalm 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.

(WEB)

David asks God to create a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within him. Pray this verse slowly, making it your own request for an inner change that no outward effort could produce.

Philippians 3:13-14

13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul refuses to be defined by what lies behind and presses on toward the goal. Pray this when you are tempted to stay stuck in regret, asking God to help you forget what is behind and keep moving forward in him.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can be quiet for a few minutes, such as before you check your phone or before the house wakes up. Sit with a cup of something warm, or stand by a window where you can see the morning light. If your hands feel restless, hold a pen and write one specific thing you are asking God to forgive or renew, then pray the prayer over that line.

It also helps to share this prayer with someone you trust. Ask a friend, spouse, or pastor to pray it with you or over you, and let them hold you accountable to the next small step you name. A fresh start is easier to live when other people are standing with you in it.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who makes all things new meet you with mercy that does not run out. May he lift the weight you have carried for too long and give you a steady, clear path into this day. May you rest in the knowledge that your story is not finished, and that his faithfulness goes before you.
