Prayer for a Student: Words to Pray Over Your Son or Daughter

By
Sophie Gardner

This prayer is for a student facing school, exams, friendships, or the uncertainty of what comes next. Pray it in the morning before the school day begins, in the car on the way to campus, or in the quiet before a big test. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for a Student

Lord, you know every hallway, every classroom, and every lunch table where this student spends their days. You know the pressure of the grades they are working toward and the quiet worries they may not say out loud. Thank you that nothing about their studies or their friendships is hidden from you. Help them to trust that you are with them in the library at midnight and in the room where the test is handed out.

Give them a clear mind when they study and a steady heart when they feel behind. Where they feel lonely, bring a friend who will sit beside them. Where they are tempted to compare themselves to others, remind them that you made them on purpose and that their worth does not rise or fall with a score. Guard their honesty when shortcuts look tempting, and give them the courage to ask for help when they need it.

Be near to them in the decisions that feel bigger than they are: which classes to take, which path to explore, and who to trust with their future. Teach them to listen for your guidance and to move forward with peace even when the answer is not yet clear. We place this student in your hands today. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, please be with my student today. Calm their nerves, sharpen their focus, and help them remember that they are not alone. Give them wisdom for the questions they face and kindness for the people they meet. Let them know your presence in every class and every break. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this over the student’s big decisions, asking God to be the one they lean on rather than their own limited understanding. Ask that he would make their path clear as they go.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

When your student faces a hard problem or an unfamiliar subject, pray that they would ask God for wisdom, trusting that he gives generously and without reproach.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage for the anxious moments before exams or difficult conversations. Pray that the student would bring every worry to God and receive a peace that steadies their thoughts.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Pray this psalm for the student who feels overwhelmed or far from home. Ask that they would lift their eyes to the Lord, who watches over their comings and goings.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

This verse can shape how your student approaches their work. Pray that they would study and serve with sincerity, remembering that their effort ultimately belongs to the Lord.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment for this prayer, such as the drive to school, the breakfast table, or the few minutes before your student heads out the door. Keep a hand on their shoulder, or rest a hand on your own heart, as a small reminder that you are standing with them. If you are praying alone for a student you do not live with, write the name on a note in your planner and pray it at the same time each school day.

You can also invite others to pray with you. A parent, grandparent, teacher, or friend from church may be glad to join you in asking God to strengthen this student. Some families pray together at dinner, taking turns to name one hope for the week ahead. Whatever rhythm you choose, return to it steadily, trusting that God hears every word.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before this student into every class and exam, and may he walk beside them through every friendship and disappointment. May his peace settle over their mind and his strength carry them when they feel weary. May they grow in wisdom, kindness, and courage, and may they always know they are loved.
