This prayer is for the moment when fear is louder than faith, whether you are facing a hard conversation, a medical appointment, a new job, or a decision you cannot undo. Pray it when your heart is racing or when you feel too small for what lies ahead. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Prayer for Courage

Lord, you know the fear I am carrying today. You know the thoughts that circle at night, the what-ifs that crowd out sleep, and the knot in my stomach when I picture what I have to face. I do not want to pretend I am not afraid. I am asking you to meet me in the middle of it and to be near enough that I can feel your presence, not just recite your promises.

Give me courage that is steady rather than showy. Help me take the next step, even if it is small, and trust that you will make the path clear as I walk it. Where I feel weak, remind me that you do not need me to be strong on my own. Let my strength come from you, and let me rest in the truth that you are already going ahead of me into this situation.

Father, I release my need to control every outcome. Quiet the voices that tell me I am alone or that I will fail. Fill me with the calm that comes from knowing you are faithful, and give me the words, the wisdom, and the nerve to do what is right. Whatever happens, let me face it with a heart that belongs to you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am scared right now, and I need you. Steady my breathing and my thoughts. Give me enough courage for this next step, and no more worry than I can carry. Go before me and be beside me. Help me remember that I am not facing this alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly, letting the command to be strong and courageous settle into the place where your fear lives. Ask God to make the promise of his presence feel as real to you as the fear does.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

Read this psalm aloud and name the things you fear. Then speak the question it asks back to God, and let your prayer move from anxiety toward confidence in the one who is your light and your help.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by placing your name in the place of the one being addressed. Thank God for his promise to strengthen and uphold you, and ask him to help you believe it on the hard days.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God for a spirit that is not timid but grounded in love and self-control. Pray for the courage to speak and act with gentleness, even when you feel exposed.

Psalm 56:3-4

3 When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. 4 In God, I praise his word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

(WEB)

Pray these verses in the moment you feel afraid, choosing to trust rather than to stay locked in worry. Ask God to help you hold on to that trust each time fear returns.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can be still, such as early in the morning before the day begins or in the car before you walk into a difficult room. Sit with your hands open in your lap or hold something steady, like a cup of tea or the edge of a table, so your body can settle while your mind turns to God. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let the words sink in.

You might also ask a trusted friend, a spouse, or a small group to pray this with you or over you. Someone else speaking these words can be a reminder that courage is not only something you produce but something God gives within a community. Come back to this prayer whenever the fear returns, and let it become a familiar place to rest.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and stand beside you in every step you take today. May he steady your heart, strengthen your hands, and remind you that you are never alone. May you walk forward with a quiet courage that comes from the one who has already won the victory.
