BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This prayer is for the times when you are tired of waiting, worn down by a long trial, or simply unsure how you will get through the next week. Pray it when you feel your strength giving out, whether that is first thing in the morning, in the middle of a hard day, or late at night when the worry will not let you sleep. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your heart needs them.

Prayer for Endurance

Lord, I am tired. Some days I can feel the weight of this season pressing on my chest before I have even got out of bed. The problem I am carrying has not gone away, and I do not see the end of it yet. Some nights I lie awake running the same thoughts in circles, and some mornings I wonder how I will manage another day of it. I bring all of that to you honestly, because you already know it, and I would rather be honest with you than pretend.

Father, I ask you to be my strength when mine has run out. Give me the steady kind of endurance that keeps putting one foot in front of the other, even when I cannot feel any progress. Help me not to grow bitter in the waiting, and keep my heart soft toward you and toward the people around me. When I am discouraged, remind me that you have carried me before and that you have not changed. Teach me to rest in you instead of trying to hold everything together myself.

Thank you that you do not ask me to endure in my own power. Your grace is enough for today, and I trust you with tomorrow too. Help me take the next small step, and the one after that. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am running low on strength right now. Give me enough endurance for this next hour, and then for the one after it. Steady my breathing and my heart, and keep me from giving up on what you have asked me to do. I need you more than I need an answer today. Hold me up when I cannot stand on my own. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel completely drained. Ask the Lord to renew your strength the way he promises here, and picture yourself waiting on him rather than waiting on your own resources to come back.

Romans 5:3-5

3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: 5 and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

(WEB)

Use this passage when you are tempted to read your hardship as evidence that God has forgotten you. Ask him to show you how endurance is forming something good in you, even when you cannot yet see it.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Pray this when you are worn out from doing good for others. Ask God to keep you from growing weary of faithfulness and to give you patience for the harvest he has promised in his own time.

Hebrews 12:1-2

1 Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

(WEB)

Bring these words to God when the race feels too long. Ask him to help you lay down what slows you and to fix your eyes on Jesus, who endured far more than you are facing now.

Psalm 46:1-2

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas…

(WEB)

Pray this psalm when the ground beneath you feels unsteady. Ask God to be the refuge you run to, so that your endurance rests on his unshakable presence rather than on your circumstances changing.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can be still for a few minutes, such as before the day’s first demands or after the house has gone quiet at night. Sit in a chair you find comfortable, and keep something in your hands while you pray, like a cup of tea, a smooth stone, or a worn Bible. Let the physical object remind you to stay present rather than drifting back into worry. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let it sink in.

It can also help to pray this with someone else. Ask a friend, a spouse, or a member of your church to pray it with you, or to pray it over you when you are too weary to form the words. Tell them specifically what you are enduring so they can pray for it with you. Many people find that sharing the load makes the waiting feel less lonely.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who sees your struggle give you strength for each day as it comes. May he steady your steps when the road is long and remind you that your labor is not in vain. May you know his peace in the quiet moments and his nearness when the hard places feel too heavy to bear.
