This prayer is for the moment when you know what needs doing but your heart is pulling back from it. You can pray it in the morning before a hard conversation, in the car before a difficult appointment, or late at night when fear keeps you awake. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where they fit.

Prayer for Finding Courage

Lord, you know the thing I am dreading. You know the call I have been putting off, the decision sitting on my chest, and the voice in my head that keeps saying I am not ready. I confess that I have been measuring my strength against the size of the problem, and the problem keeps winning. Please meet me where I actually am, tired and unsure, and remind me that I am not facing this alone.

Give me courage that is steady rather than loud. Let it be the quiet willingness to take the next step, even when my hands are shaking. Where I am afraid of being judged, of failing in front of people I love, or of hearing an answer I do not want, hold me in your peace. Help me remember what you have already done for me and let that memory steady my feet. Show me the one faithful step I can take today, and give me the nerve to take it.

Thank you that courage does not depend on my own reserves. You are the one who goes before me, and you are the one who will be there when I come back weary. I give you this fear, this task, and this unknown outcome. Make me brave enough to walk toward it with you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am scared right now, and I do not have much to offer. Give me enough courage for this next minute, and then enough for the minute after that. Steady my breathing, quiet the racing in my mind, and help me do the thing in front of me. I trust that you are already here. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Joshua heard this command just before he led a nation into a land full of threats. Pray these words slowly, placing your own name where the people were addressed, and ask God to remind you of his presence each time fear rises.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

David names the things that terrify him and then declares whom he trusts. Use this verse to name your own fear out loud, then declare the one who stands behind it with you.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly to an anxious people and promises his strength. Pray this verse as a conversation, letting each promise in it answer a specific worry you are carrying.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Paul writes to a young leader who was tempted to shrink back. Ask God to replace the spirit of timidity in you with the power, love, and self-control this verse describes.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

Paul writes this from a prison cell, not a place of comfort. Read it as a statement of dependence rather than a promise of ease, and ask God to supply what you lack for the task ahead.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment before the thing you fear. Early morning works well for many people, or the few minutes in your parked car before you walk in. Sit with your feet on the floor and let your hands rest open on your lap, which can help the body settle while the mind catches up. Read the prayer once through silently, then aloud, pausing after each paragraph to let the words land.

If you are praying for courage with someone else, ask them to read the prayer while you listen, or take turns reading the paragraphs. A friend, spouse, or small group can also pray the shorter version over you on the way out the door. Speak the verses over yourself in the first person when you can, and write the one step you will take on a card to keep in your pocket.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who went before his people go before you now. May he stand beside you in every hard room and steady your heart when it wants to run. May you be strong and courageous, not because you are fearless, but because the one who holds you is faithful. Go in peace, and go in courage.
