This prayer is for the hours when you lie awake and your mind will not settle. Pray it when you cannot sleep, whether the wakefulness comes from worry, grief, pain, or simply a racing head at two in the morning. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak the words that rise up in you.

Prayer When You Cannot Sleep

Lord, I am awake and I do not know why my thoughts will not be still. The house is quiet, but my mind keeps returning to the same things: the conversation I dread tomorrow, the bills that will not balance, the test results I have not heard yet, the friend who is hurting and whom I cannot fix. Father, I give each of these to you one at a time. Take the worry I keep picking up again and carry it for me.

You do not sleep and you do not grow weary, so I can rest in knowing you are awake with me. Quiet my body where it is tense and slow my breathing. Where my fear is telling me that everything depends on me, remind me that you are the one who holds the morning and everything in it. Let me remember that I do not have to solve tonight what you have already placed in your hands.

If sleep does not come, let this time become a time of closeness with you rather than a time of struggle. Meet me in the dark and steady my heart. Give me rest in my spirit even if my eyes stay open. I trust you with the night and with the day that follows. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I cannot sleep and my mind is loud. I hand you the worry I am holding, and I ask you to take it from me for now. Calm my breathing and settle my thoughts. Be near in this quiet hour and let me rest in your care, trusting that you are awake and watching over me until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly when your mind is restless. Let the words remind you that peace is something God gives, not something you must manufacture by forcing yourself to relax.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you feel you must keep working through the night to hold everything together. Ask God to remind you that rest is a gift from him and that you are not required to carry the weight alone.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray these lines when you feel alone in the dark. Thank God that the one who watches over Israel does not drift off, and ask him to keep watch over you as you lie awake.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring your specific worries to God one by one as you pray this passage. Ask him to guard your heart and mind with a peace that does not depend on how the situation turns out.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

When exhaustion and anxiety meet in the middle of the night, pray this invitation back to Jesus. Name the weariness you feel and ask him to give you the rest he promises.

How to Pray This Prayer

Keep a glass of water and a small lamp near the bed so you can get up without fumbling in the dark. If you are awake for more than twenty minutes, sit up, move to a chair, and pray the prayer slowly, pausing after each concern. Holding something cool or textured, like a smooth stone or the edge of a blanket, can help your hands stay still while your heart settles.

You might also ask a trusted friend or spouse to pray this with you by phone or text, or to pray for you in the morning. Sharing the burden often makes the night feel less lonely. If sleeplessness continues for weeks, let your doctor know, since rest is part of caring for the body God made.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who never slumbers keep watch over you through the night. May he calm every restless thought and loosen every knot of worry. May you wake in the morning refreshed in body and steady in spirit, knowing you were held the whole night long.
