This page offers prayers for the days after a breakup, when the relationship has ended but the ache has not. You can pray the longer prayer below word for word in a quiet moment, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit. Many people find the first few weeks the hardest, so these prayers are written to be returned to whenever the grief rises again.

Prayers After a Breakup

Lord, I come to you with a heart that feels bruised and tired. The relationship is over, and even when I know it was right to let go, I still find myself replaying conversations, wondering what I could have done differently, and missing the person I shared so much of my life with. Be near to me in the quiet moments, when the house is still and the old routines feel empty. Help me to grieve honestly rather than pretending I am fine.

Father, I also bring you the questions I cannot answer yet. Who am I now that this chapter has closed? Will I trust again? Did I hope too much, or not enough? Take these questions from my hands and hold them for me. Give me wisdom to learn what this season has to teach, and keep me from bitterness toward the other person or toward myself. Let me forgive where forgiveness is needed, and let me receive forgiveness where I have fallen short.

I ask you to steady my mind, to ease my sleep, and to give me small reasons to get up each morning. Remind me that I am not alone and that you have not stepped back from my life because my life has changed. Restore my sense of worth, not from a relationship, but from being yours. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my heart hurts right now, and I do not have the words for all of it. Hold me in this moment. Steady my breathing and quiet the thoughts that keep circling back. Help me take the next small step, whatever it is, and remind me that you are close to the brokenhearted. I trust you with what I cannot carry today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the loss feels heavy and you wonder whether God notices. Ask him to draw close to the specific place where your heart feels crushed, and thank him that nearness is his nature.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring the wounds you feel to God by name, asking him to bind up what has been torn open. Pray for healing that takes the time it needs, trusting that he is the one who heals.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and imagine setting down the weight of the relationship at Jesus’s feet. Ask him to show you what it looks like to come to him tired and honest today.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel cut off or alone. Ask God to settle deep in your heart the truth that nothing, including a lost relationship, can separate you from his love.

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

Use this passage to pray for hope about what is coming. Ask God to open your eyes to new paths, even when they are not yet visible, and to make you willing to walk them.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helps to pray in the morning, before the day fills with messages, reminders and the other person’s name on a screen. Choose a chair or a corner that feels safe, and keep a glass of water nearby. If your hands feel restless, hold a pen and write down the thoughts that surface as you pray, or fold a blanket in your lap to give your body something steady to do.

You may also pray this prayer with a trusted friend, pastor, or small group who can hold you accountable to speak honestly to God. Ask them to pray the words aloud over you when your own voice runs out. There is no set length of time for grief, so return to these prayers as often as you need, whether once a day or once a week.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees your tears keep you through this season. May he guard your heart, renew your strength day by day, and lead you gently toward the healing he has already begun. May you rest in his faithful love and walk forward with a peace that is larger than your sorrow.
