BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

These prayers are written for the time just before you leave home, whether you are heading to the airport, loading the car for a long drive, or boarding a train to a city you have never visited. Pray them in the driveway, at the gate, or in the seat before the engine starts. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart leads.

Prayers Before Traveling

Lord, I am about to leave, and I give this trip to you before I take another step. Go before me to the place I am headed and be there already when I arrive. Watch over the roads, the skies, the rails, and every driver and pilot who will carry me. Keep my body steady, my mind alert, and my family safe while I am away from them. Where I feel anxious about delays, missed connections, or things I cannot control, quiet me and remind me that you are not surprised by any of it.

Father, I also ask for good conversations, honest rest, and wise choices along the way. If I will be meeting people, give me kindness toward them and open ears for what they need. If I am traveling for work or for a hard reason, go with me into those rooms and give me clarity. Bring me home again in your time and in good health, with my heart more grateful than when I left. I trust you with the miles between here and there. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am on my way, and I am not going alone. Keep me safe on this road, in this air, and on this route. Guard the people I love while I am gone, and guard the people I will meet. Calm my nerves and steady my hands. Bring me to my destination and bring me home again. Thank you that you travel with me wherever I go. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray these words as you step out the door, asking God to keep your going out and your coming in under his care. Name the specific trip you are beginning so the promise feels personal and present.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and ask God to send his angels ahead of you on the road or in the air. Let it steady you when you picture the unfamiliar parts of the journey.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this verse when plans are uncertain, such as a flight that might be delayed or a route you have not driven before. Pray it as a decision to trust God with the directions you cannot see yet.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Bring this promise to mind when fear rises before a long trip or a frightening stretch of road. Ask God to let his nearness be more real to you than the unknowns waiting ahead.

Psalm 139:9-10

9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel far from home or from the people you love. Thank God that no distance takes you out of his reach, and ask him to lead you there with his own hand.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this in the few minutes before you leave, while you are still at home and the bags are packed. Sit for a moment with your keys, your ticket, or your seatbelt in your hands, and let your fingers do the waiting while your voice does the asking. If you are traveling with others, read the prayer together aloud, taking turns with the paragraphs so everyone is included in the request.

If you are flying, you can pray the shorter version quietly at the gate or once you are settled in your seat. If you are driving, pray it at the car door before you turn the key, and keep the words simple enough to return to at a red light or a long straight stretch. Someone at home could also pray it for you on the morning you leave, which gives you the comfort of being remembered even before you go.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you on every mile of this journey. May he keep your steps steady, your heart at peace, and your people close in prayer. Wherever you rest tonight, may you know that you are watched over and well loved. And when the trip is over, may you come home with a grateful heart and a story of God’s faithfulness.
