When life turns hard, the words to reach God can feel hard to find. This prayer is written for those seasons of grief, illness, financial strain, broken relationships, or long uncertainty, and it can be prayed at any hour. You may read it aloud exactly as written, or let it become a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.

Prayers During Difficult Times

Father, I come to you because I do not have the strength to carry this on my own. The days feel heavy, and some nights I lie awake with my mind running through every worry: the bills, the phone call I am dreading, the body that does not feel right, the hurt that has not healed. You already know each one of them, and you know the things I have not found words for yet. Thank you that I am not hiding them from you.

Be near me in this hard season. Steady my breathing when fear rises up, and give me enough wisdom for the next decision, even if I cannot see the whole road. Surround the people I love with your care, and where I have failed or been failed, bring your mercy and your truth into the mess. Help me to rest in your faithfulness when I cannot feel it, and remind me that you have walked through darkness before and have never abandoned anyone who called on you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am overwhelmed right now. Be close to me in this moment, quiet the fear in my chest, and give me the next step and nothing more. Hold the people I am worried about, and help me trust that you are working even where I cannot see it. Thank you for listening to me just as I am. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

This short line reminds you that God is a refuge you can run to, not only a theory you hold. When you pray it during a hard season, name the specific trouble and then say, in your own words, that God is your shelter in it.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Use this verse when grief or disappointment has left you feeling crushed. Pray it slowly, and ask God to draw near to the broken place in your heart rather than asking him to hurry you past it.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

When fear is the loudest voice in the room, let this promise of God’s presence become your prayer. Speak the words back to him, and then pause to notice one small thing you can do today with courage.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

This invitation fits the weariness that comes from carrying too much for too long. Pray it as an honest response, telling Jesus exactly what is burdening you and accepting his offer of rest.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

This verse is easy to misread as a promise that everything will turn out well. Pray it instead as trust that God is present and active even in what you cannot yet understand, and ask him to show you where he is already at work.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment that is yours, such as early in the morning before the house wakes up, during a lunch break in the car, or in the last minutes before sleep. Sit with your hands open on your lap or hold a cup of something warm, so your body has something to do while your heart slows down. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each concern to let it be named before God.

If you cannot pray alone, ask a trusted friend, a small group, or your pastor to pray this prayer with you or over you, and let them speak the words when your own voice runs out. Many people find it helpful to pray the shorter version several times a day during the hardest weeks, then return to the longer prayer when there is more room to breathe.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep watch over this difficult season and steady every heavy step. May he be gentle with what is broken, faithful in what is uncertain, and near in every quiet hour. May you rest in the peace that holds steady when circumstances do not, and be carried through to the other side.
