When someone you love has died, or a loss has left you hollow, prayers during grief give you words when your own feel stuck. This page offers a full prayer you can pray slowly in a quiet moment, a shorter version for when you have only a breath or two, and Scripture to pray alongside it. You can read the prayers aloud exactly as written or use them as a starting point and speak plainly from your own heart.
Prayers During Grief
Lord, you see the empty chair at the table and the phone I still want to call. You know how the house feels too quiet now, and how ordinary moments catch me off guard. I do not have the strength to make sense of this loss, so I bring the whole tangle of it to you. Be near to me in the mornings when I wake up and forget for a second, and in the evenings when the memories come back all at once.
Father, some days I am angry, some days I am numb, and some days I simply cannot pray at all. Hear me anyway. Give me permission to weep without shame and to be honest about the questions I carry. Hold the people who are grieving with me, and help us lean on each other rather than pretending we are fine. Where I feel alone, remind me that you have not left me to carry this by myself.
Comfort me in the specific losses I have not named yet: the holidays that will look different, the decisions I never wanted to make, the future I pictured that will not come. Keep my heart from hardening and my mind from spinning. Let your steadiness hold me up when my own feet give way, and let me trust that you are working even in the places I cannot yet see. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am hurting right now and I do not have words to say. You know what I have lost and how much it aches. Be close to me in this moment, steady my breathing, and help me feel your presence even if only a little. Carry what I cannot carry for the next few minutes. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 34:18
The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
(WEB)
Pray this when your heart feels crushed and you need to be reminded that God draws near rather than keeping his distance. Ask him to show you his nearness in the room where you sit right now.
Psalm 147:3
He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.
(WEB)
Use this verse to bring your broken places to God by name. Ask him to bind up the wounds you feel most sharply, one at a time, and to give you patience while healing takes its own slow course.
Matthew 5:4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and let Jesus speak directly to your sorrow. Pray that you would receive his promise of comfort as something real and near, not just a sentence you have heard before.
Psalm 56:8
You count my wanderings. You put my tears into your bottle. Aren’t they in your book?
(WEB)
Bring your tears to God in prayer as this verse invites. Thank him that your sorrow is not overlooked, and ask him to hold each tear as something that matters to him.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
(WEB)
Pray that God would become the comfort you need, and that in time you might be able to offer comfort to someone else who is grieving. Ask him to shape even this pain into a place of compassion.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time when the house is quiet, perhaps early in the morning with a cup of tea or in the evening before sleep. Sit somewhere you feel safe, and hold something in your hands, such as a photograph, a piece of their clothing, or a smooth stone, to give your body something to do while you speak. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence, and let silence stand where words run out.
If speaking aloud feels too hard, pray it silently or write it in a notebook, one line at a time. You might also ask a trusted friend, pastor, or family member to pray it with you or over you. Grief is rarely meant to be walked alone, and hearing someone else voice these words can open a door your own heart has not yet found.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who collects every tear draw near to you in your sorrow. May he steady your heart in the hard hours and give you rest when the nights are long. May you be held by people who love you and by a God who never lets go. Go gently, and know that you are not forgotten.
