BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

These prayers are written for a student facing the pressures of school, exams, friendships, and the uncertainty of what comes next. You can pray them in the morning before the school day begins, the night before a test, or whenever worry about studies or the future starts to crowd your thoughts. Read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and put the student’s name and specific concerns into your own words.

Prayers for a Student

Lord, you know the student I am lifting up to you today. You know the late nights over textbooks, the knot in the stomach before a test, the friendships that shift from one month to the next, and the questions about who they are becoming. Give them a clear mind when they study and a steady heart when they feel behind. Help them remember that their worth does not rise or fall with a grade, a score, or the opinion of a classmate.

Grant them wisdom to choose good friends and the courage to be kind even when it is hard. Guard their evenings from comparison and their mornings from dread. Where they feel lost about their future, show them the next step rather than the whole road. Teach them to rest as well as work, and to ask for help without shame. Let them sense that you are near in the classroom, on the bus, and in the quiet hours when no one else is awake.

Thank you for the gift of learning and for the people who teach and encourage them. Keep their body healthy, their sleep restful, and their hope alive. We trust that you are at work in their life even when they cannot yet see how things will turn out. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I bring this student to you right now. Calm their nerves, sharpen their focus, and steady their heart. Help them do their best and then trust you with the rest. Surround them with people who are good for them, and remind them that they are known and loved by you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this for a student who feels pulled between what they want and what they are told to do. Ask God to help them lean on his understanding rather than their own fears, and to make the path clear one step at a time.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this when the student faces a hard decision about classes, a major, or a choice that feels too big. Ask God to supply wisdom freely and without reproach, so they can move forward with confidence rather than confusion.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage when exam pressure or social stress keeps the student awake at night. Pray that they will bring each worry to God in prayer and receive a peace that steadies their thoughts when logic alone cannot.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Pray this for a student who feels overwhelmed or far from home. Ask God to be the one they look to for help, the one who made everything they are facing, and the one who keeps watch over their comings and goings.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this when the student is tempted to give up on schoolwork or to do only what is required. Ask that they would work with sincere effort as though serving the Lord, finding meaning in faithful diligence even when no one notices.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for a student at a set time each day, such as during the drive to school, while packing a lunch, or at the kitchen table after dinner. If you are praying for your own child, you might keep a small card with the prayer in their backpack or on the bathroom mirror. Writing the student’s current exams, teachers, or challenges in the margins keeps the prayer specific and current.

You can also invite others to pray with you. A parent, grandparent, teacher, or friend can join in by praying the shorter version over the student by phone or text before a big test. Holding the prayer with your hands, perhaps by lightly touching a notebook or a desk, can help you stay focused and remind you that God’s care reaches into ordinary spaces.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this student and keep them. May he make his face shine on them and give them peace as they learn, grow, and find their way. May they walk with confidence, knowing they are never alone in the classroom or beyond it.
