BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This page offers prayers for an elderly parent, written for the moments when you are worried about their health, their memory, their loneliness, or simply the years that are passing. You can pray the longer prayer below in a quiet place, read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. Each prayer can be prayed for a father, a mother, or both.

Prayers for an Elderly Parent

Lord, you know my mother and father better than I ever will. You knew them before they were born and you have walked with them through every season of their lives. Today I bring them to you as they grow older. Their bodies are tired, and some days they ache in ways they never used to. Give them strength for the ordinary tasks, and give them rest when the work is too much. Protect them from falls, from illness, and from the fear that comes with needing help.

I also bring you my own heart. I feel a mix of love, worry, and grief when I see them change, and sometimes I feel guilty about how much I cannot do. Help me to be patient when repeating a question feels hard, and gentle when a memory slips away. Give them company in their loneliness, and let them feel your presence even when the house is quiet. Remind them that their worth has never depended on what they can still do.

Give them peace about the days ahead, and give me wisdom for the decisions I must make on their behalf. Let us speak honestly with one another and listen well. Let our family be kind, and let us forgive where we have fallen short. Hold them close, and hold me too. Thank you for the years we have been given together. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my parent is getting older, and I am worried tonight. Be near them where they are, whether that is at home, in a care room, or in a hospital bed. Give them rest, comfort, and a sense that they are not forgotten. Steady me as well, and show me the next small thing I can do with love. Thank you that you never grow tired of them. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 71:9

Don’t reject me in my old age. Don’t forsake me when my strength fails.

(WEB)

Pray this for a parent who fears being set aside. Ask God to be their faithful companion when their strength fails, and to keep them from feeling that they are no longer useful or wanted.

Isaiah 46:4

Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of God carrying his people through old age. Pray that your parent will rest in the certainty that God has carried them all along and will continue to do so.

Psalm 92:14

They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green…

(WEB)

Pray this for the fruitfulness of your parent’s later years. Ask God to keep their hearts fresh, and to show them that their life still bears good fruit in the people they love.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Use this verse when you feel afraid for your parent or for yourself. Pray that they will be strong and courageous, knowing that the Lord goes with them into every uncertain day.

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for a parent facing a hard season or the end of life. Ask that they will know God’s nearness in the darkest valleys and feel that they do not walk alone.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for an aging parent in the early morning or late in the evening, when the day is quieter. Sit in a chair you find comfortable, perhaps near a window or a photograph of your parent. Let your hands rest open in your lap, or hold something that reminds you of them, such as a cup of tea or a worn Bible. Speak slowly, and pause where your heart needs to pause.

You do not have to pray this alone. Invite a sibling, a spouse, or a friend from church to pray with you, either in person or on the phone. If your parent is able, pray with them, holding their hand and speaking the words together. Let the prayer become a regular habit that you return to each week, so that your family carries your parent in faith over time.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who has kept your parent through all their years keep them still, and may his peace settle over their days and nights. May he give you the patience and strength you need to care for them, and may you find rest in his faithful love. Go in peace, knowing that the one who made them and you holds you both with steady hands.
