BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

These prayers are for athletes who want to bring their training, their nerves, their wins and their losses before God. They work well before practice, in the locker room before a game, on the drive to a meet, or late at night after a hard loss. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for Athletes

Lord, you made our bodies and you know every muscle, every breath and every tired step. Today I step onto this field, court, track or pool trusting that my strength is a gift from you and not something I have to prove. Steady my heart when the crowd is loud and my mind starts racing ahead to the score. Help me to play with focus, to listen to my coach, and to respect the teammates and opponents who are working just as hard as I am.

Protect my body from injury and give me wisdom to rest when I need it. When I am sore, tired or frustrated with my progress, remind me that growth often comes slowly and that you are patient with me. If I push too hard or let pride drive me, correct me gently. Let me compete with honesty, never cheating, never belittling anyone, and always remembering that my worth does not rise or fall with the stat sheet.

Whether I win or lose, let my character be the thing people notice most. Give me grace in victory and humility in defeat, and let me be a source of encouragement to the younger athletes who look up to me. Thank you for the joy of movement, for the friendships built in sweat and shared goals, and for being present with me in every race and every match. Be glorified in what I do today. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am about to compete and my nerves are loud. Settle my breathing and quiet my fear. Let me play with courage and clear focus, honor the people around me, and remember that I am yours whatever the result. Help me give today my best effort and leave the outcome in your hands. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Corinthians 9:24

Don’t you know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run like that, that you may win.

(WEB)

Paul uses the image of a race to describe the discipline of faith. Pray this verse before a competition to ask God to help you run with purpose and self-control, not chasing the prize for your own glory.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

This verse is often quoted by athletes, but it is about contentment and dependence on Christ in every circumstance. Pray it when you feel weak or stretched, asking God to supply the strength you cannot find on your own.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah speaks of renewed strength for those who wait on the Lord. Use this verse during long seasons of conditioning or recovery, asking God to refresh your body and your spirit when you feel depleted.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Paul reminds believers to work as though serving the Lord himself. Pray this before practice to shift your motivation away from applause and toward faithful service in whatever you are doing.

Psalm 18:32-34

32 The God who arms me with strength, and makes my way perfect? 33 He makes my feet like deer’s feet, and sets me on my high places. 34 He teaches my hands to war, so that my arms bend a bow of bronze.

(WEB)

David credits God with training his hands for battle and making his feet like the feet of a deer. Pray this passage when you are thankful for your ability and want to name God as the source of it.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the main prayer in the quiet minutes before warm-ups, sitting on the bench or standing by your locker, with your hands loose in your lap or resting on your gear bag. If you prefer to move while you pray, say the shorter version while stretching or jogging slowly, letting each breath line up with a word. Keep a small notebook in your bag and jot down anything God brings to mind during the day.

Consider asking a parent, coach, teammate or youth leader to pray this with you before a big event, or to pray for you in the days afterward. Athletes often carry pressure alone, so a shared prayer can remind you that you are not the only one invested in how you perform. Afterward, take a few minutes to thank God for what went well and to bring him the things that did not.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who formed every muscle and sinew guard your body and steady your mind. May he go before you into every game and walk beside you through every practice. May you compete with courage, rest with peace, and carry his joy wherever your feet take you.
