BIBLEREADER // ELIAS NELSON

This page offers prayers for engaged couples, written for the season between a proposal and a wedding day, when plans, families, money and feelings all seem to arrive at once. You can pray these words aloud together as written, or you can use them as a starting point and speak in your own voice. They work well at the end of a long planning conversation, before a difficult family call, or on a quiet evening when you both want to ask God for the marriage ahead.

Prayers for Engaged Couples

Father, thank You for bringing us to this point. We come to You as two people who love each other and who are learning what it means to build a life together. We confess that we do not yet know how to be married, and that some days we feel more anxious than joyful. Give us patience with each other when wedding details pile up, and give us gentleness when we disagree about money, family, or how we spend our time.

Lord, guard our hearts from comparing our engagement to anyone else’s. Help us to talk honestly about our fears and hopes, and to listen without rushing to fix. Teach us to forgive quickly and to ask for forgiveness when we are wrong. Bind us together in Your love so that our promises to each other rest on Your faithfulness and not only on our feelings. Make our home a place where Your peace is known. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, we are engaged and we are tired, and we ask You to steady us. Keep our words kind today and our hearts open to each other. Help us remember that we are on the same side, and that You are with us in every decision still ahead. Let us love one another with patience and humility. We trust You with our future together. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Pray this for the strength that comes from partnership. Ask God to make you helpers to each other in the ordinary work of planning, budgeting, and carrying one another’s burdens through the months ahead.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and turn each phrase into a request. Ask God to form patience, kindness, and endurance in both of you, especially in the stressful weeks when wedding preparations test your tempers.

Colossians 3:12-14

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. 14 Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.

(WEB)

Pray this over the clothing of the heart. Ask the Lord to help you put on compassion, humility, and forgiveness toward your fiancé or fiancée, and to bind everything together with love.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this when the path ahead feels unclear. Ask God to keep you from leaning only on your own understanding, and to make your steps straight as you decide where to live, how to save, and how to serve together.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel pressure to make the wedding or the marriage perfect. Ask the Lord to build your home and guard it, so that you rely on Him rather than on your own efforts.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time when you are both rested, such as an evening walk, a quiet breakfast, or before bed. Sit side by side or hold hands, since physical closeness often helps couples speak more openly. Some couples find it helpful to take turns reading a paragraph each, so both voices are heard.

If you are praying alone, you might ask a trusted friend, mentor, or family member to pray this for your engagement as well. Keep a short written list of the concerns you named, and return to it weekly to thank God for what He has done and to bring new worries to Him.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who called you together keep you both in His care. May He give you a love that grows through every season, a patience that outlasts every delay, and a peace that guards your hearts as you step toward the life He has prepared for you.
