This page offers prayers for finding courage when fear, uncertainty or a looming decision leaves you feeling small. You can pray the longer prayer below in a quiet moment, such as early in the morning or before a hard conversation, or read the shorter version when you only have a breath to spare. Both can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use them as a starting point and put your own fears into your own words.

Prayers for Finding Courage

Lord, I come to you because I am afraid, and I would rather be honest with you than pretend I am fine. My heart races when I think about what lies ahead, and my mind keeps rehearsing every way this could go wrong. I feel the pull to shrink back, to avoid the phone call, the meeting, the step I know I need to take. Please meet me in that place of fear and do not leave me there alone.

Give me the courage to do the next right thing, even if I cannot see the whole path. Steady my hands and quiet the voices that tell me I am not enough or that I will fail. Remind me of the times you have carried me through before, when I thought I could not go on, and let those memories give me something solid to stand on. Help me to speak the truth when it is hard, to stay when I want to run, and to trust that you are already at work in the situation I cannot control.

Father, I do not ask you to remove every difficulty from my life. I ask you for the strength to walk through it with you beside me. Fill me with your peace where my anxiety has taken up residence, and let my courage rest not in my own ability but in your faithfulness. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am scared right now, and I need your strength more than my own. Be near me in this moment and give me the courage to take the next step, however small it may be. Steady my heart, quiet my thoughts and help me to trust that you are with me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

This verse was spoken to Joshua as he faced a daunting task he had not chosen to be alone with. Pray it as a reminder that the same God who commanded courage is present wherever you are going today, including the places that frighten you most.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

David names his fears plainly and then answers them with what he knows about the Lord. When you pray this verse, speak your own fears out loud and then name the one you trust to be your light and your protection.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly to a frightened people and promises his presence, his strength and his help. Let this verse slow your breathing and turn your attention from what you fear to the God who says he will hold you up.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

This verse admits that fear happens and then points the fearful heart toward trust. Pray it when fear first rises, and let the act of saying “I will trust” become a deliberate turning toward God.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Paul writes to a young leader who was tempted to shrink back from his calling. Pray this verse for the courage that comes from God’s gift, and ask him to shape your timidity into the kind of quiet strength that serves others well.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can be still for a few minutes, such as before you leave the house or in the car before a difficult appointment. Sit in a chair with your feet on the floor and your hands open in your lap, or hold something in your hands, like a pen or a cup of tea, to ground yourself in the present. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let the words settle before you move on.

You might also pray this prayer with a friend, a spouse or someone from your church who is facing a similar fear. Ask them to read it aloud over you while you listen, or take turns praying the sentences that speak most to your situation. Praying together can remind you that courage is often shared, and that you do not need to carry the weight alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into whatever lies ahead and walk beside you every step of the way. May he give you a steady heart when fear rises and a clear mind when the path feels unclear. May you know, deep down, that you are not facing this alone, and may his peace guard you as you go forward in faith.
