If you are looking for prayers for friends, this page gives you a written prayer you can read aloud as it stands or use as a starting point for your own words. Pray it when a friend is struggling, when you are thinking about someone who has drifted away, or when you simply want to ask God to bless the people who keep you company through ordinary days. Make it your own as you go.

Prayers for Friends

Father, thank You for the friends You have placed around me. Some of them have known me since childhood, and some I met only last year, but each of them has shown me something of Your kindness. Today I bring them before You. Be near to the ones who are carrying heavy things right now, the ones facing illness, grief, a job that has gone sour, or a marriage that feels strained. Give them rest where they are weary and strength where they feel thin.

Lord, guard their hearts from loneliness. Remind them that they are seen by You even when no one else is watching. Where a friendship has grown cold, soften the ground between us, and give me the courage to reach out first. Help me listen more than I speak, to notice when someone is quieter than usual, and to ask the honest question instead of making a polite one. Let my friends know they can tell me the truth without fear of losing me. Make me a safe place for them, the way You have been for me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I lift up my friends to You right now. You know who is hurting and who is rejoicing, and You know what each of them needs before they ask. Be with them in their work, their worries and their quiet evenings. Keep them close, and keep me kind toward them. Thank You for the gift of friendship. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking God for the friend who stays through hard seasons, and ask Him to make you that kind of friend to someone who needs you. Let the phrase about adversity shape what you ask for, both for yourself and for them.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Use this passage to pray for friends who labor alongside you or who are going through a difficult stretch alone. Ask God to bring someone close enough to help them up when they fall, and to make you quick to be that help.

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

(WEB)

When a friend is celebrating, pray that you would rejoice honestly with them, without envy. When a friend is grieving, pray that you would have the patience to sit with them. Ask God to shape your heart toward both.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the burdens your friends carry that no one else sees. Ask the Lord to show you one specific weight you can help lift this week, and to give your friend the grace to accept that help.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

(WEB)

This verse points to the deepest love one person can show another. Pray that your friendships would be marked by that kind of self-giving faithfulness, and thank God that Jesus showed it to us first.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for friends in the early morning, before the day fills up with messages and errands. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee or tea, and let your mind go through the names of the people you care about. If you keep a small notebook or a note on your phone, write down a name or two each day so that your prayers have a pattern and no one gets forgotten.

You can also pray this prayer with a friend, either in person or by phone. Ask them what is on their heart, and then read the prayer together, pausing after each part for them to add their own requests. Consider inviting a small group from your church or neighborhood to pray through the list of friends each week, taking turns reading verses and adding names as they come to mind.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your friends and keep them in His care. May He lift their faces and give them peace, and may they know, in the middle of their ordinary days, that they are loved by the One who made them. May the Lord bless you too, and make you a faithful friend to everyone He brings across your path.
