BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

These prayers are written for Good Friday, the day Christians remember the crucifixion of Jesus. You can pray them in the morning before you go to church, during a quiet hour at lunch, or in the evening as the day closes. Read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for Good Friday

Lord Jesus, today I come to the foot of the cross, and I am not sure what to say. The day is heavy with the knowledge of what you suffered. You were betrayed by a friend, abandoned by those closest to you, mocked, beaten and nailed to a wooden beam. Help me to look at it honestly. Help me not to rush past the pain to the joy of Sunday, but to stay here for a while with you.

I bring you the people I carry with me today. Some of them are sick, and some are sitting in hospital corridors or waiting for test results. Some are grieving someone they loved, and others are carrying a quiet regret they have never said out loud. Be near to them, Father, in the places where they feel most alone. Let them know that you saw everything you were willing to endure, and that nothing about their pain is hidden from you.

Thank you that the cross was not the end of the story for you, but it was the price you chose to pay for me. Forgive the sins I have carried this week and the ones I have hidden even from myself. Make my heart soft enough to receive that forgiveness, and steady enough to live from it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Jesus, you gave everything for me today. I am grateful, and I am tired, and I do not have much to offer you right now. Take what I have, which is a small and honest heart. Hold the people I love in your hands. Let this day mean what it was meant to mean, and let me rest in the love that cost you so much. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 53:5

But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly, letting each phrase sink in. Thank God that the wounds of Jesus were borne for your healing, and ask him to show you where you still need that healing today.

Romans 5:8

But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

(WEB)

Read this verse as a statement about your own life. Ask God to help you believe that his love was not a reward for your goodness but a gift offered while you were still far from him.

Mark 15:34

At the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is, being interpreted, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

(WEB)

Pray this verse if the day feels dark or if you feel far from God. Jesus himself spoke these words, and you can bring your own cry of confusion to the same Father who listened to him.

John 19:30

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished.” He bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a moment of completion. Thank Jesus that the work of rescue was finished, and ask for grace to stop trying to earn what he has already given freely.

Hebrews 4:16

Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.

(WEB)

Use this verse to approach the throne of grace with confidence. Name your request plainly, trusting that the one who died for you wants you to come close and speak honestly.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer in the early part of the day, before the noise begins. Sit somewhere quiet, with a cup of tea or coffee in your hands if that helps you settle. Holding something warm can make it easier to slow down and stay with the words instead of rushing through them.

You can also pray it together with someone else. A spouse, a friend, or a small group can take turns reading each paragraph aloud. If you have children at home, let them light a candle or place a cross on the table while you read, so the day is marked in a way they can see and remember.

A Blessing to Close

May the one who gave himself on the cross meet you in the stillness of this day. May he steady your heart where it aches, and may the love that held him through the darkness hold you now. Rest in the grace that was bought for you, and walk toward Sunday with peace.
