BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

These prayers are for graduates, whether you are praying for a son or daughter stepping out of high school, a friend finishing a degree, or yourself reaching the end of a long course of study. Pray them on the morning of the ceremony, the night before a first job begins, or whenever the future feels larger than the person standing in it. You can read the prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for Graduates

Father, thank You for bringing this graduate to this day. They have worked through early mornings, late nights, hard exams and quiet doubts, and some of that effort was seen only by You. Thank You for the teachers, friends and family who helped carry them here. Let them rest for a moment in what they have finished, and let that rest be real before the next question starts pressing in.

Now we bring the future to You, because it is full of questions they cannot answer yet. Where will they live, who will they work beside, and what will the first year really look like? Give them wisdom to choose well and courage to choose honestly. Keep them from measuring their worth by a job title or a salary, and remind them that they are Yours long before they are useful to anyone. Guard them from comparison with classmates who seem to be ahead.

Lord, be near in the lonely seasons that come after the celebrations end. When the group chat goes quiet and the applications go unanswered, give them patience and a friend to call. Protect their body and their mind from exhaustion, and teach them to ask for help when they need it. Whatever comes next, let them walk into it knowing You went before them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank You for this graduate and for the work that brought them here. Be with them in the decisions ahead and in the waiting that comes after. Give them clear sight for the next step, honest hearts about what they want, and rest when the pressure rises. Remind them they are known and loved, whatever the outcome. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this over the graduate’s decisions about work, study and home. It asks God to direct the path they cannot yet see, and it reminds them that trusting God is a daily choice, not a one-time answer.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when the future feels uncertain. Jeremiah wrote it to exiles who could not see a way forward, and it is a good promise to hold up for a graduate who is wondering what comes next.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Pray this for the graduate who fears they are not ready. Paul was confident that the God who starts a good work will finish it, so this verse invites them to trust God’s work in them, not only their own effort.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Use this one for the tired graduate, the one who has run hard through school and now feels drained. It speaks of renewed strength for those who wait on the Lord, which can be a comfort during the long gap between finishing and beginning.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this as the graduate starts work or further study. It frees them to do their work wholeheartedly for God, not only for grades, promotions or the approval of others, and that changes how ordinary tasks feel.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many graduates find the early morning a good time for this prayer, before messages and expectations crowd in. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee or tea, and if you are praying for someone else, hold a photo of them or a small object from their graduation, such as a card or a tassel. Let your hands rest open in your lap as a sign that you are giving the future to God rather than gripping it.

You can pray this prayer together with the graduate, or with a small group of family and friends. Take turns reading the paragraphs aloud, and leave a moment of silence after each one so people can add their own names and requests. Ask the graduate what specific fear or hope they would like included, and let that shape the final words you speak.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who brought you this far go before you into what is next. May He give you wisdom for each choice, steady friends along the way, and rest when you are weary. May you know, in every season, that you are loved and that your worth was never earned by a diploma.
