Prayers for Grandfathers: Words to Pray for the Men Who Raised Us

By
Steven Mitchell

This page offers prayers for grandfathers, whether you are asking God to strengthen your own grandfather, to comfort him through illness or loss, or to bless the older men who have shaped your family. Pray it at the bedside, in the car on the way to visit, during a quiet moment at the kitchen table, or whenever memories of him come back. You can read the prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your heart needs them.

Prayers for Grandfathers

Father, thank you for the grandfathers who have walked with us, taught us to fish, fixed the porch step, sat with us after bad news, and quietly showed us what faithfulness looks like over many years. Be near to my grandfather today. If his body is weak, give him strength for each hour. If his memory is fading, hold the pieces of his life securely in your hands. If he is afraid, remind him that you have not forgotten him and that his name is written on your heart.

Lord, bless the grandfathers who are far away, the ones who are grieving a spouse, and the ones who feel their best days are behind them. Let them know their lives still matter to you and to the people who love them. Give them wisdom to share and humility to receive help. Forgive us where we have taken our elders for granted, and give us patience to listen to their stories. Thank you for their love, their work and their example. Keep them close, and let them rest in your faithfulness. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I bring my grandfather to you right now. Be with him in whatever he is facing today. Give him peace where he feels weak, comfort where he feels lonely, and joy in the small things that remind him he is loved. Help me to honor him with my words and my time. Thank you that you see him, know him and are working in his life. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 71:18

Yes, even when I am old and gray-haired, God, don’t forsake me, until I have declared your strength to the next generation, your might to everyone who is to come.

(WEB)

This verse asks God to stay with the aging and to let the next generation hear of his strength. Pray it for your grandfather by thanking God for the years he has lived and asking that his life would keep pointing others toward God’s faithfulness.

Psalm 92:14

They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green…

(WEB)

The psalmist describes the righteous as still bearing fruit in old age. Use this verse to ask God to keep your grandfather spiritually alive, growing in peace and gladness even as his body slows down.

Proverbs 16:31

Gray hair is a crown of glory. It is attained by a life of righteousness.

(WEB)

Gray hair is described here as a crown of honor, earned by a life lived in righteousness. Pray this over your grandfather to thank God that his years carry dignity and worth in your eyes and in his.

Isaiah 46:4

Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.

(WEB)

God promises to carry his people even into old age and gray hair. Let this verse be a prayer of trust, reminding you and your grandfather that God’s care does not depend on how strong either of you feels.

2 Corinthians 4:16

Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.

(WEB)

Paul writes that outwardly we waste away, but inwardly we are renewed day by day. Pray this for a grandfather whose body is failing, asking God to renew his inner life, his hope and his sense of purpose.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as early morning with your coffee or the quiet minutes before bed, and pray this prayer for your grandfather by name. If you can, sit beside him or hold his hand while you pray, or keep a photo of him where your hands can rest on it. Writing the prayer in a notebook and adding a line each time you return to it can turn it into a record of God’s faithfulness across the seasons.

Invite others to pray with you, especially family members who knew him in different chapters of his life. A brother, a cousin, or a grandchild can each add a sentence or a memory. If distance keeps you apart, call him and pray on the phone, or ask someone nearby to read this prayer to him in person.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who has carried your grandfather through every season continue to keep him safe and make his face shine with peace. May he be wrapped in the love of those who call him family, and may he rest in the knowledge that his life has blessed many. May the Lord be his strength and his song.
