This page offers prayers for joy, written for the moments when gladness feels far away and your heart needs to be lifted back toward God. Pray these words in the morning, in a quiet minute at lunch, or late at night when the day has been heavy. You can read the prayer aloud exactly as it is written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Prayers for Joy
Lord, I come to you today feeling a little heavier than I want to be. Some mornings joy seems like something other people have, and I am tired of waiting for it to show up on its own. The to-do list is long, the worries about money and family and my health keep circling, and I find myself going through the motions without much gladness in them. I am not asking you to pretend these things are small. I am asking you to meet me in them.
Father, teach me that joy is not the same as having every problem solved. Remind me that you are the source of gladness, and that you have not stopped being good just because my circumstances are hard. Open my eyes to the ordinary gifts around me: the warm cup in my hands, the voice of someone I love, the simple fact that I woke up breathing. Let these small mercies start to lift the weight I have been carrying. Replace my grumbling with thankfulness, and let gladness rise in me slowly, the way morning light comes into a room.
I release my need for control into your hands, and I trust that you know the way forward even when I cannot see it. Fill me with a joy that holds steady when things are uncertain, a joy rooted in who you are and not in how I feel from one hour to the next. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, my heart feels dry right now, and I need your gladness more than I need anything else today. Show me one good thing I can thank you for in this moment, and let that thanks grow into something warmer. Turn my gaze from what is missing to what you have already given. Fill me with joy that is steady and true, and help me carry a little of it into the next hour. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find it helps to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, before the phone and the news and the demands of the day take over. Sit somewhere you can be still, perhaps by a window or at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let the words settle before you move on.
You might also try praying with your hands. Hold a small object that reminds you of a blessing, or open your palms as a sign that you are receiving what God offers rather than gripping for it. If you are praying for someone else who is struggling to feel joy, you can read this prayer over them, changing “I” to “them” and “me” to “them” as you go. Let others in your church or family pray it with you.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who delights in you fill your heart with a gladness that does not depend on the day’s circumstances. May his peace guard your thoughts, and may his goodness meet you in small moments you did not expect. May the joy of the Lord be your strength today and in every season ahead.
